So my weekend (saturday) started off at work. I was able to get out of work at 3 and begin my 7 hour drive (plus one time zone) to Ann Arbor from its BIG TEN affiliate Champaign Ill. I got into town to a freinds house around midnight and got into bed a little after 12:30...my alarm went off 4 hours later.
PreRace: This race was somewhere between a B and a C race for me. I wanted to be competitive but didnt put a whole lot into it besides wanting to finish in an hour and thirty-five minutes. This race consists of a 800/14.5/5 mile trail run of which the run is on a mountain bike course (which means UP UP UP, little down, UP UP UP, ROOT, UP UP UP, Gravel, DOWN, wooden bridge, ok you get the idea)
Swim: I didnt pick a good spot and was washed around a little bit at the beginning from some overzealous swimmers but it cleared out pretty quick and I was able to get some room to myself and found some bubbles to follow. Being in the 3rd wave of the day we had to fight around some stragglers in the 2 waves ahead of us but was able to come out of the water in 13:31...not bad, but Im capable of way better...oh well....
T1: From the water its 200 yards up a grassy hill...T1 time 1:55
Bike: Let me just say this, if the road doesnt get fixed, the race will be nonexistant in 2 years guaranteed and maybe 50% of this years competitors wont be back next year.....picture the worst paved road you can and let your imagination do the rest. Its all hills, long climbs, steep short climbs, with maybe one mile out of the 14.5 on a flat with great pavement. I was able to hold onto a 21.3mph average over the course so Ill take it. Bike time 39:24
T2: I would like to thank the tree above my TA for donating a branch that took a chunk of flesh out of me. Time :54
Run: Do I need to go over the visuals for the run course again? Put it this way, this run course takes :45 to a FULL minute or more off everyones mile pace, I dont care who you are. With never ending hills, sand, gravel, more sand, HILLS HILLS HILLS HILLS I was able to finish the 5 miles in 39:50.

This really is a great race, highend talent galor but the roads make it undesireable. I finished in 1:35.31 so Im happy with the way it went considering the roads and trails. The chunk of skin out of my toe is coming along but its still tender. Ill do it again in an instant, IF, the roads get fixed, its only a matter of time before someone gets seriously injured on that course or worse.......a tricked out carbon TT bike goes missing in one of those holes.

i was out in ann arbor a few months ago, and went for a ride on some of those roads. your race report does not do justice to how awful they are. congrats on surviving in one piece!

Thanks for the great race report! I did that run (1/2 mary) in April, and it almost killed me. I can't imagine doing it after a swim and bike. Your times were great, cause that course is very difficult. Have a great season!
