Swimming in Maine this summer-wetsuit needed?
Well, how warm/cold is the water? I know locally you can google the lake and find average temps and even actual current temps (because someone monitors that) and find out what it is.
Yeah-I did try googling first.
I haven't found any resources that help me with average or current temps on this lake (Wesserunsett). Of course I'll keep looking but I was hoping someone might have some experience I could rely on as well.
ok, so trying to find something for you, but is it Wesserunsett lake or Skowhegan ...or both?
:)
Lake Wesserunsett is in Skowhegan, Maine.
Lots of long names.
Thanks for looking-maybe I just need a second set of eyes.

Cool---thanks, I will take a look. Gonna run out and mow the lawn first :)
Can't speak to the lake temps, but I do a fair amount of lake swimming in Wisconsin and wear a wetsuit all the time. Buoyancy is your friend, especially if something goes wrong during a swim in a deep lake.
Best practice would also mean having a very understanding friend act as a kayak escort if you are swimming outside a roped-off swim area.
Also, make sure you find some of the loudest, most obnoxious-colored swim caps you can. Boaters on lakes have a tough time seeing swimmers, especially if you're out there early in the morning when there is sun glare on the water, in foggy conditions, etc.
MAINE? Wear a snowsuit then a wetsuit over that...lol
Seriously; buy a long sleeve wetsuit. Maine water is cold....
I'm from Maine, and spend some time in the Rangely Lakes area, a bit southwest of where you will be. You WILL need a wetsuit until late July. Once you get into August you'll be all set. Temps are a bit warmer this year due to quick ice melt, so you might be able to get away without one, just depends on your tolerance level. Mine is high due to surfing all winter (38degree water temps), but a wetsuit makes it a bit more comfortable.
Hmm...I haven't EVER swam in cooler waters. Indoor pool gal here-so I'm not even sure what my tolerance will be.
Very helpful though-especially since you are even SW of where I'll be.
Thanks!
looking for some used ones now. do you think the short/short sleeves will work?
I would personally get a long sleeve; but up to you. If you think the water is going to be 60 degrees of under than it's long sleeve time (at lest for me, I have no tolerance of cold water at 6-8 am)

Hello all,
I'm going to be leaving my home and heading up to Maine this summer to attend an artist residency program. I will be training over the summer for a few tris in the DC area when I return.
I won't have access to a pool while there but will be living on a lake where I can swim until my hearts content. For anyone who has swam in Maine lakes(Skowhegan, to be exact)--do you think I'll need a wetsuit-will be there from June 14-Aug 14?
I really have no idea what to expect (nor do I presently even have a wetsuit)!
Thanks for your thoughts.
