Where Would You Go?
Lake Placid
Ironman. Monday night tri's in the summer. MTB. Road. Ski (Downhill and Nordic) Hiking. Trail running. The High Peaks. Rock climbing, Ice climbing. Lots of water. Olympic training center. Big multi sport community.
AND you can work seasonal jobs, like everyone else!
If I were single (NOT that i wanna be) I'd be there.
Oh,buy a big, warm coat.

AZ......San Diego......Boulder....Northern California, all sound good to me. They all have good multi-sport community, nice weather most of the year, and Blondes. Yes I said Blondes much better than having the option of skiing, but that is just me. Good luck
Boulder is simply flooded with triathletes, runners, cyclists, you name it. Its a great atmosphere there, and if i could go to a place that offers good training weather AND skiing, i would definitely go to boulder.

now if I could only find a half decent job in Boulder. I'm not looking for 6-figures, just pay bills. The good news is that entry level engineering positions are starting to show up! I've seen 2! (I refuse to move to a HUGE city). Thanks for the input, keep it coming. I'm still googleing jobs in all of these places. I'll find something.
also i should mention danville california. you dont get skiing, but its a great suburb of san francisco and a lot of great endurance sports stars have come from there (dave scott, chris lieto lives there now i think, steve larsen, scotty bauhs (a relatively new professional runner with some real talent)).

go to Colorado! thats all I have to say...
A buddy of mine lives in Vail, and its great for training/ skiing, so I'm sure the same can be said of Boulder. However, if you want year round training and don't mind the heat, go to mid-south Florida. No hills though. If you don't want heat, I'd vote california.
Disclaimer: I live in TN, and can train virtually year round here too, it just gets pretty cold in jan/feb. You can drive 3 hours and get crappy skiing in the smokies though! I love it here!
Mallorca.
Beautiful weather, daily flights to Italy/France/Switzerland/Austria and the alps.
I may have read your first sentence incorrectly, though, taking it to mean that you'll be off work for 3 months and looking to move somewhere stunning in the world.
If you want an engineering job in the states, with good training and skiing, you really only have a few options: Northern Cali, Denver/Colo. Springs/Boulder, or move to San Diego/LA and find a place close to the airport.
I'm not going to tell you to live in the east because, well, the snow out there is useless. Unless you like waxing daily. Then you may be able to get in a nice morning.
Too easy...Colorado. I'm in Colorado Springs and would add it to the list with Boulder and Denver. Job market may not be as great but if you could find something I would jump on it. I live just north of downtown and its a perfect size if you're not looking for a big city, plus cost of living is lower. Denver is 45 min. away, Boulder about 1:15. The riding is great, if you want flat (at least Colorado flat) you head east, if you want to climb just start riding west. Air Force Academy is a great place to train on the bike and run. And we have the Santa Fe trail that you can run for as long as you want on. Winters aren't as bad as you would think. And I don't think I need to put a plug in for the skiing. Once I'm done with the Army we're coming back for sure.

Kelowna, B.C., right in the heart of the Okanagon Valley It's not where Ironman Canada is, but it's on the same lake. Phenomenal skiing in the winter. Plus compared to Colorado the place is empty. Additionally, visa's aren't that hard to get if you have a college degree.
Doesn't it depend on what you do for a living? You have not told us that. In Seattle things are turning around and all of my software friends laid off have jobs again. We certainly wern't hit as bad as many areas and you really wouldn't know it's as bad as they say it is by going to the mall. Training is great , not to hot, not too cold (although some rain...sorry, it isn't perfect), and there is skiing a couple hour drive away.. You are a 6 hour drive from IMC, IMCDA and could also drive to IMAZ in a day. Personally I won't live where there isn't water because we SCUBA so for me San Diego would probably be the only other place I would live other than here. Plus we are VERY bike friendly if you decide to bike commute :)
A very wise man said to me "you need to make your own playground" once when I was bitching about how flat Ontario was. He was right. You could take the flattest most seemingly boring place, make a start and finish line, throw the gauntlet and you've got world class competition. Tri and Adventure racing changed my life in that respect. Don't let geography be your only criteria. Look for a community that is into the sports you love to do, that makes all the difference. When you've got people to share in the joy, something special manifests. When I travel, I almost always choose the destination that has a community that lives and breathes their sports. Places like Bend, Oregon Whistler B.C. Moab, Utah, Lake Placid, NY, Any Town Colorado... Oh and it has to have at least 1 killer coffee shop, 1 awesome brew pub, and 1 great breakfast joint.
I'll see you there.
What doesn't kill you defines you.

Ok, so coming along on 3-months of unemployment it's time to throw the towel in on a city and maybe a region of the world that I love. That being said, where should I go? I've decided to fallow my bliss and go somewhere I can train for triathlon more effectively. So, all things considered, if you had NO ties where would you move with your multi-sport-addiction in mind and why? Bonus points if I can still ski in the winter, but that can be a reasonable proximity and be ok. Thanks for all of your input. I apreciate knowing that trifuel will never let me down in the advice department.
