I am a freak....maybe
i find that once i start the swim i don't think of the seaweed and fish as much as i think "just keep swimming" (like on finding nemo)...smaller races are great to do open water swims in...good luck and keep up the training
prendergi,
Are you signed up for the Steelman and Qualerman at Lake Nockamixon? I would love to go for the clinic and the 3 mile swim but my schedule won't allow it. Good luck.

I'm signing up for the Steelman tri but not the 3 mile swim. Just a little out of my league yet. I didn't know they had it but sounds good for next year. I am making the Steelman tri the last tri this season because of a marathon I want to run in Oct.

I haven't swam in a lake in quit sometime and I thought I would get all freaked out because of seaweed and fish and everyother unseen thing that resides in a lake . . .
Seaweed in a lake? Interesting. :) And I fear more the things I can see:

Om nom nom nom!
Thankfully, I don't live in Georgia!

Great Sooner, thanks for the visual...Saturday nite I watched a crappy Canadian movie about how Nessie from Scotland was having babies in Lake Superior who were then attacking the locals (who were saved by a scottish cowboy who smoked cigars...baaaaaad ass dude). I then went to my weedy, gooey gross pond for an open water swim at dusk....all I could see under me were Loch Ness monster eggs...good for the panic attacks, my imagination.
I try and swim in different ponds whenever possible so that I don't get freaked out by a certain bottom or gross-factor in a race. I am convinced there are great whites in all lakes and ponds in Newfoundland...
Kari, good luck next week at your first OWS. I think you will love it. It makes swimming in a pool feel somehow artificial by comparison. Don't forget to post a report afterwards and have a great race!

I had and open water clinic this morning. I haven't swam in a lake in quit sometime and I thought I would get all freaked out because of seaweed and fish and everyother unseen thing that resides in a lake but I actually really enjoyed the swim. In PA there is no where you can swim in a lake. For some reason they just don't let you do this. But with this clinic you can. There are two more clinics and I think I am going to the other two just so I can get more experiance. My first open water swim is next Sunday so that is where the rubber will meet the road - so to speak. We will see how that goes! So if anyone in the area is interested in going to the clinics I will put the info up. It happens at Lake Nockamixon. Very calm event with lots of people. There were about 127 registrations.
