I usually have GU's, GU Hydration or Cytomax, Clif Bars, and bananas with me for rides.

powergel, gu, bannanas, clif bars...all depends on the length of the ride. short rides get the gels, over 3 hours gets solid.

Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.

I think the best alternatives to gu's and bars are bananas and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. You can also have cookies or trail mix, it really depends on how intense you are riding and what your stomach can handle. They also have that carbo pro where you can add to your drink to take in a lot of liquid calories.

i used Cytomax for years ... i have been using Accerlarade for about 8 months as it has some protein in it. I like the Cytomax for races though ....

"Sustained Energy" from Hammer Nutrition works good as a single fuel source for long workouts or races. Used it exclusively in Half Iron distances with only water, and Endurolytes.
It has no taste, so you can flavor it as you like, and has NO simple sugars, it's all long burning carbs. It's liquid so it's absorbed faster than gels or solids, and it's a good way to get about 350
calories into a bike bottle. It' about 20 buck a tub, that's the only caveat, so I usually just race with it, and train with the cheaper gatorade / fig newton combo.

a bunch of my IM friends used the sustained energy .... i think they had like 500-600 calories in a water bottle. they doubled up the servings... it looked like cake batter.

check out Bakers Breakfast Cookies. Lots of good carbs and no artificial crap. (I have no affiliation with BBC)

This is the second time that I am hearing about BBC. I am going to try them.

On longer rides I also like Fig Newtons, Clif Bars are good too.

For drinks I like Carbo-Pro because it tastes just like water.
You get carbs w/o the sweet which can upset my stomach.
I combine that with thermolyte tabs for the electrolytes.

I also like a bottle with Chicken Noodle soup in it.

Nothing to it, but to do it

Bakers rule. Good balance, easy to transport and eat, and you don't feel like you are eating somthing that's extruded.

Bakers Breakfast Cookies are awesome. You can freeze them to keep longer, but mostly they just taste great frozen (or thawed). Great stuff.

Yeah man, I just started packing those nuTRI-grain muffin bars for long rides. A great supplement for the PowerBar, Clifbar, etc. I can only take so many! Good carbs & protein: 30+ & 5g per serving and much cheaper than energy bars. Drink: Accelerade, Gatorade Endurance, and/or water depends on distance. Anyone else think that Gatorade Endurance is a little rich or thick?

I also use Baker's Cookies for long day beach volleyball tournaments. Those combines with bananas and wheat tortillas with peanut butter and honey are the best I have used. Apple Newtons are a good standby also.

On shorter rides I'd go for the GU, longer rides I'll have an Isostar PowerBar ...
Drink : 1 field-bottle Gatorade (love it!) and 1 plain water OR applejuice mixed with water (a nature-approach) :)

Question number one: Do the cookies come in chocolate? I believe that chocolate and peanut butter are the food of the gods (But I don't like them together)
Question number two: I'm really new to this, so bear with me, do you guys eat as you go or is this inbetween events? I've only do long distance running before and I have the fear that if I tried to eat and bicycle at the same time that I would crash into a mailbox or inflict bodily harm upon myself. (Hint: I'm the kind of person who can't clap and sing at the same time :) )

Anybody remember this stuff called ULTRAFUEL, I'm pretty sure GNC marketed it. The one thing I remember: 600 cals. per serving, 100g. carbs. I think the bottle was 16oz, it came pre-mixed. That stuff knocked you off a wall! I looked for it a while back and did not see it around. I may resume my search in an effort to find the turbo boost button for Lake Palcid.

Hey Xcountry, what my friends who race do is use gel on the bike part. Gu, PowerGel, Clif Shot, etc. They consume it from a flask to make it easy to grab it and pedal. They usually save the solid stuff for the run T1 or T2 areas. Just my opinion.

Hey guys, another pretty good tasting product I love:
Maxim Carbo Cake, don't know if you guys int the US have it, but here in Holland it's pretty easy to get ahold of check: http://www.maxim.nl/products/carbocake.html
Chocolate cake LOOOADED with carbs, pretty darn tasty and even an idiot could make it ( for instance.. ME!)
I'd love to get my hands on Erin Bakers Breakfast cookies, in Oatmeal raisin and Double chocolate, but they won't ship outside US :

Dunno about others but liquids don't seem to help AS much as solid food does during training, and races for me. Like yesterday, I felt like crap at work, ate a powerbar, got a boost, rode 25km very strong, got home and ate half a burger my son had left over from dinner and ran an hour brick. For me its the solid stuff that works well. Anyone else? I usually pack a burger or sub for T2 and slam it down as I start to run during races. Works great, except the ability to breath while I run and eat :D
