okay, experts chime in...my new wetsuit has velcro I wish my students had on their sneakers. It is so hard to pull apart to get out of my suit it's not funny! How can I mellow it out? Can you shave velcro?? Save me!! I may be riding in black neoprene and will no longer have the pretty tan lines we all strive for...

play with it a little, it should get easier with time.

don't shave it, that will reduce the life of it and reduce the actual connect overall

cover half of the contact surface with duct tape; check it
cover 3/4 of the contact surface; check it
play with it until it's reasonable; then leave the duct tape (or get out your sewing tools and cut/secure to the right size)

You can do the duct tape, but how about you take the hook part of the velcro and stick it to some carpet, or other linty material a few times. It should clog the hooks up enough to make it easier to pull apart from the loop part. Totally reversible too
