Dry throat on the swim
I'm interested to hear the responses on this one...I'm often the opposite, swallowing too much water or inhaling some and occasionally getting hiccups.
i dont know what today will bring to me, but thats just fine.
My guess is that the chlorine levels are high, but I am by no means a pool expert.
+1 to charlie, I've had that happen on occaision and usually attribute it to higher chlorine levels
Keep a water bottle on deck & sip from it occasionally.
Definitely keep a water bottle on deck. The chlorine might be a little high and it's drying you out but as long as you stay hydrated it shouldn't be a problem.
i have a dry mouth problem in general.... and i notice when swimming its even worse... same in the ocean.
and yesterday i was looking for something for my son in the drug store and came across OraMoist. where the canker sore meds were...
its a patch you put on the roof of your mouth...
haven't tried.....
OraMoist.? Better hope jtrimom doesn't read this post. She will turn it into something about "tapering".
I noticed this past weekend at the Nathan triathlon my mouth was dry during the swim, had never happened before.
I swallowed too much water during my first tri and got horrible stomach cramps on the run, so I was being extra cautious not to swallow any. This was in a lake so chlorine wouldn't have effected it.
I thought it was strange too.

I only get the problem you describe in pools, but never in the ocean or lakes. Through my possibly flawed logic, this has led me to believe that it is either the chlorine or another pool chemical causing the irritation.
If it gets you like it gets me, it get sore right at the soft pallet/ uvula area. (I said uvula, and it has nothing to do with tapering...I promise) Even when I'm careful to not get but the tiniest amount of water in my mouth during the workout it seems to still happen some days. Maybe it's the fume/vapor of the chemical from the pool?

hey, now...the thought didn't even OCCUR to me until you mentioned it :)
but the word "uvula" did (from JMichael's post)
Taper Naked

Hey gang, so I've recently moved and have the great fortune of now living about a 10 minute from a fantastic (and super cheap) community pool. Yesterday was my first time in and I had planned to do about an hour of moderate swimming but after about 40 minutes my throat was started to get really dry. I got out to get a sip of water from the fountain and went back and within just a few minutes I had to call it a day.
I've done a lot of pool swimming in my day but not for a couple of years now. Is this a common problem that I've just forgotten about? Perhaps they are using a new chemical? If it is common enough, any advice? Thanks!
