Black Bear Sprint Race Report
You are very speedy! Sounds like a great race.
I think I can, I think I can, I think I can...
Nice work, gotta love those side stitches!
Nice job. A challenging course but what a beautiful day to race. Congratulations on 1st. I will write up my report tonight or tomorrow.

Congrats on a great race!
I loved the line about you forgetting pants!
I think the only time I accidentally forgot my pants was in a dream. I was probably late for a final or forgot my lines on stage too.

Great job Gsal on a tough course, gotta luv dem hills.
Congrats on 1st AG and 7th OA!
Really inspiring gsal. I can't imagine being that fast. And can't wait to see what you can do once you get this "side stitch" thing worked out. Congrats on 1st place!
That which does not kill me makes me faster...
teehee no pants! :)
Congrats on a strong day! I love courses where the hills are tough and you know if you can do it the next race will be cake in comparison.

Great job! What a day, sounds great except for the side stitch and the pants.
Some unsolicited advise about the side stitch- I have tried this and it seemed to help a little (I think I got it from a running mag). I try inhaling really fast and big through my nose and really fast out my mouth. Not hyperventiling fast (not shallow breaths) and really try and focus on my breaths extending my abdomen rather than lifting my chest. I usually do that along with lifting my arm of the side that is cramping. Trying to strech and get oxygen through that muscle. Most of the time it helps and I don't have to walk. I can at least keep running.

Hey Gsal, congrats on a good race! I was in the same wave as you though quite a way back. Don't worry about the run, you'll figure out what is causing the side stitches and be all the better after. And if you do feel bad, just think about the third place guy! Best swim, within 30 seconds of the best bike, and then seems to have lost it on the run. :-/ We all have bad segments, but it looks like overall you had a superb race.
I've gotta say though - the hills are tough, indeed, but I'm surprised you say that's the hardest hill you have ever biked on. It is steep but pretty short. One of the harder hills that I've raced on I supposed, definitely for a triathlon.
Anyway, nice job once again!
prendergi thanks for the advice. I'll try this next time it happens to me in a race/training.

Great race and overall finish! I have a love/hate relationship with hills. Once you suffer through them you feel like a kid on Christmas morning once you hit a flat/downhill stretch.

WAY to GO! Keep it up - very inspiring to this newb. I may do the Black Bear tri next year, it's pretty close. Nice to see the Garden State represented so well w triathletes!
+1 to zagfan re the hills ....

Why? Many people have asked me... to test my limits ... and to push beyond them.

so here it is, my race report. Started the day off waking up at around 4:30 and drove over to the race site 30 minutes away. I accidentally forgot to pack a pair of pants, so i was freezing my butt off up untili put my wetsuit on. Final water temp was around 68 degrees, which is hot compared to my last race (a deadly 57 degrees). so heres the race.
I started with the first wave, which included the ages 15-29. I stayed steady on the swim, but unfortunately didnt get onto the lead pack of about 3-4 people, so i ended up doing a decent amount of work alone trying to catch up with the front pack of guys. I came out of my wave in 5th, but after a speedy transition i left T1 in 4th. It was a long run out of transition to bike mount. Immediately after leaving transition i passed someone to get into 3rd. THen i started hammering on what was literally the most challenging bike course i've ever been on. I caught up to the 2nd place guy and passed him on a hill around mile 4 (out of 18). He then passed me again on a hill at around mile 5. A minute after he passed me, there was an obvious turn with cops and everything that the person a few bike lengths in front of me missed, so i just took advantage and hammered away while he attempted to make up his losses. I never saw him again, on the bike or run, but i know he finished. At around mile 10 i hit literally the hardest hill ive ever biked on, but worked through it, and got passed by someone in the swim wave before me (some professional 30 year old). I finished the bike in 4th, despite passing two people, because 2 professionals past me on the bike total. TRansitioned quickly to the run. Started the run great, and i was building some time onto the guy in front of me. Around mile 1.5 i got my trademark side stitch, and attempted to run it out, but it was so painful that i had to do something about it. I stopped for a little to push it out, but it only went away temporarily. I ended up hammering it in and got passed by 1 person on the run. I ran a very slow(for me) 20:16 5k. Still, i won my age group (16-19) by a few minutes and came 7th overall. Not a bad day considering that this wasnt my 'A' race. AFter this bike, i know that no course will be as challenging as the one i raced on today.
thanks for reading my report! good luck to anyone who has any races coming up.
