I did it
Congrats. I have my first OWS in two weeks and will probally have a similar experience but to put it into perspective like you said the minute I emerge the worst will be forgotten. Good Job triathlete

Congrats! That's awesome!
I think I can, I think I can, I think I can...
Congrats - Way to persevere on the swim.
Been there myself -
Overcoming something like that makes it special,
Congrats!!!
I can say I've been there too. My asthema started acting up in the 64 degree water, and to top if off it took me 18 mins to finish my OWS. I was purple when I came out of the water. Good work! It can only get better for you. When's your next race??
Yay for you! Congrats. and now that the panic's behind you, you can be confident to enjoy the rest of the season!

Awesome! Way to push through!

excellent. i forget how spoiled i am here in hawai'i, since a lot of my swimming is open water. so congrats, and it only gets a bit easier (the open water part, not necessarily the swim).
Great job! Wasn't that an amazing feeling crossing the finish line?!?! You should feel extra proud of yourself for not only finishing, but for pushing through that fear. Way to go!
That which does not kill me makes me faster...
Congrats! One reason I love that the swim is (usually) first is that I've forgotten it by the finish line and want to do another tri ;)
(ok actually I like the swimming now, but when I started, it was SCARYYYY!!!)

You are not the first or the last person who will panic in an open water swim. I seriously thought I was going to die during my first. This season they are part of my training. I still have navigation issues (where the hell is my black line?). My first OWS of the season was yesterday and I almost swam into a boat lane.
Congrats Triathlete! When is your next race?

way to persevere in the water!
it will get better with more time in OW
congrats on your first of many, i'm sure!
Again, congrats! Awesome to face your fear and overcome it!! Great job!

Congrats, My first OWS is tomorrow and there's alot of anxiety to say the least.
Congrats Bud. I know the feeling as well. Had my first OWS (750m) for my first tri at the beginning of May. The month of pool swimming all the sudden did not seem like I made any progress. I suddenly found myself questioning and cursing my thought process that told me to put myself through that torture. Then all of the sudden -- It was over. I was on the bike and running and finished. Got that feeling of accomplishment and am addicted now.
A little freakin' out in OWS is good. Ten years in, and I STILL go into survival mode in OWS! Congratulations, my fellow triathlete. At the finish line, everyone is a winner...
...at the finish line, there are no losers...

So despite an open water swim freak out, I did it. I can't believe I never thought about the water. I'm used to swimming at the Y with crystal clear, temperature controlled water and a line on the bottom guiding me on my way. My first stroke in the cold murky lake sent me into panic mode. Where is the closest kayaker? Who can save me when I start drowning? I had to relax, so I found some open space and tried again. All my lessons and practice went out the window, I was in survival mode but I couldn't quit. After I finally got to the turnaround buoy (which seemed like an eternity), I started getting relaxed. My form was still a mess but at least I felt confident I'd finish. I emerged from the water, ran down the field high fiving the kids along the way and immediately forgot all about the panic I was in a mere few minutes earlier. Then I was off on the bike and run, enjoying the day and all the people who cheered along the way. I definitely need to practice my open water swim, but I had a great day and it's official, I'm a triathlete!
