Dull Pain in Abdomen after crash

Last Sunday I had my firt mtb race of the season and I crashed on the final descent into the finish (and lost 2nd place :(

Anyways, it was a fast doubletrack descent with a chicane at the bottom, I came in too fast (wasn't using any brakes until the last second for the turn) and crashed. My front wheel slid out and I did a superman and it was like slip-n-slide on the dirt. After the race I had to loosen the bolts on my stem and realign it. Two days later I'm feeling a dull but consistent pain under or around my last rib on my right side. Some part of me had to hit the bike hard enough to twist my handlebars, though I don't see any surface bruising.

Anyone good with their anatomy? I don't think it's a bruised rib because pressing on the actual bone is fine. It's the area just below it. I feel it when I walk and take deep breaths, though it's dull. Thoughts?

This sounds like something a doctor should be looking at.

it could be the cartilage that attaches your ribs? (check out this pic:http://www.med.umich.edu/1libr/sma/sma_ribinjur_art.htm)

I bruised the cartilage in a go-kart accident (*hangs head in shame*) a few years ago and it gave me similar symptoms.

i would have it checked out just to be sure though. Took me about four weeks to feel 100%--with the first week being the worse.

See a doc, hopefully its just some bruised, this or that, it would be very bad if it was a torn/punctured something or other. Good luck, sorry about 2nd place!

It's strange that it took 2 days to show up. What stinks is I was just at the doctor's office for a tetanus shot (another story from that weekend's riding), too bad I didn't feel it then. That $45 copay hurts.

Thanks for the advice!

GO TO THE DOCTOR RIGHT NOW. IF YOU CAN'T GET AN APPOINTMENT, GO TO AN ER.
given that it's been a couple of days, its unlikely that you would need a surgery, but it's possible you damaged your liver, or other organs, which can be very serious. let us know how you're doing. hope its nothing, but in this situation, you cannot be too careful.

Agree you need to see a doc asap. As pointed out above, you liver and gallbladder live under your ribs on your right side. It is entirely possible to lacerate your liver but have a contained hematoma (collection of blood) that is slowly expanding, hence the delay in symptoms. You can also have a hematoma on colon (large intestines). Less worrisome but still a cause of these delayed onset symptoms could be a hematoma in the muscles or simply a muscle bruise. There are a few other things, including injury to your pancreas, abdominal wall hernia, etc., but a liver injury is probably among the most immediately concerning and life threatening. An appropriate exam should help determine if it's concerning and then an ultrasound or CT scan may be indicated. A handle bar to the abdomen is a common cause of injury to the liver and spleen (which lives on your left).

I am with firegirl, as soon as you feel pain, particularly delayed pain, you should be in ER. It is something that is getting worse, hence the delay........... please let's know what the diagnosis is, I would be stressing out about you ...........
