Interrupted training

So I have been training for IM KY, a couple of weeks ago I felt a sharp pain in my foot while running. Biking doesn’t hurt, neither does swimming, so took a week off of running, continued regular bike/swim training. I tried running lightly again last week, about 30 min into the run same pain. Decided to see an ortho, X-ray came back negative, but he is trying to schedule me for a bone scan to rule out stress fracture, he is still trying to rule out a couple other things. Anyway, I decided not to run until I get the bone scan(hopefully this week). I have increased my biking this past weekend since the bike doesn’t seem to bother it. I guess my question is if I am able to get back to running in a couple of weeks, where do I start? Just trying to be positive right now. I was basically at the beginning of my build phase, longest runs were 1:30 average, weekly average was around 3.5 hrs, the week before my initial injury. I will be at or about 12 weeks from the race in a couple of weeks. Do I start from scratch? At this point I am considering increasing my focus/time on the bike and swim and then whatever happens with the run happens, if I have to walk it, I'll walk it, just wondering if and when I can start back running how far back should I go?

I can only give you advice based on my own running injury a few years back as I am no expert. When I was training for a marathon, with 16 weeks to go for my race, I suffered piriformis syndrome which took me out of running for a month. That left me with 12 weeks to train and my longest run before the injury was 12 miles.

My first run after my recovery was 1 mile! Only because I wanted to take it easy and make sure I wasn't going to re-injure myself. From there, I slowly picked up the mileage, then once I noticed my endurance was coming back, I picked up the training from where I last left off and did the best I could. I didn't get in as many long distance (16-20 mile) runs but I was able to get in the 20 miler two weeks before my race. You don't want to increase your mileage too much or you will risk getting injured again. HOWEVER, the run training for an IM is different than for a marathon, at least according to the program I was following. Are you following the training program from this site? If so, I think you would be fine to start where you left off but slowly ease into the mileage to make sure you are truly recovered. The week day runs are lower mileage so those should be good runs to examine how you feel. I am exactly 9 weeks out to my IM and so far, the longest Sunday run has been 2:10 min and only once so far....but on average, the Sunday long runs been around 1:45 min so it seems you are in good shape, assuming you are fully recovered and ease back into the mileage.

It's good that you are mentally prepared to walk it if you have to, me too! I am on the brink of suffering from my past piriformis syndrome and I pray it doesn't fully flare up but if it does, I too will do what I can and if walking is what I have to do to cross that finish line, than so be it!

Good luck!

Well I am the same boat. I am training for IMC (Aug 30 ) and now have a tibial stress fracture. I can still bike and swim.....so the plan is to do that for 3 more weeks --I have not run for a week now and then start back with the running slowly and incorporate water jogging. In the past(I have had 4 others ) once it's healed it's healed and you can pick up running so say 3 or 4 miles then build back up. I am keeping my fingers crossed as my last one took nearly 5 months to heal. I am using this "as an opportunity to improve my biking" as my brother said. So that is the plan. If I have to walk on the marathon so be it.

In 2004 I missed three weeks out of training for IMLP. Over use injury of left knee. Couldn't run, couldn't bike ...could swim but not kick ( no big deal anyway) Came back slowly after the doc's ok and just went by feel as to how much I could do...
Had no problem's at Placid...in fact it was my best IM so far.
You may try water running with the doc' ok...and in necessary walk the Mary...believe me, you will not be alone!

I am also training for IM Louisville and my training has been interrupted by injury. I have a hip tendonitis ( or possibly a stress fracture). I have been using the elliptical or adding an extra bike each week to replace the running. When I do return to running, I will cut back on mileage and increase slowly, also use walk breaks. If I have to I will also walk the marathon. I guess this has given me time to focus on the swim/bike. sounds like you have a positive attitude toward the whole thing and that is what is most important.

Thanks for the comments/advice, actually my legs feel pretty good right now after a little break from running, Still waiting for word from the doc, Insurance company won't pay for a bone scan, but they'll pay for an MRI(go figure, that makes a lot of sense?) by the time they have it figured out it will probably have healed already. I have never used an elliptical machine, but I thought about jumping on one, is there any benefit as substitute?

Well an mri will show a stress fracture too--I have had both. Bone scan is cheaper but takes more time (you have to go in for an injection first, then back for the scan) Mri will take less time but be more $$$$ .
As for eliptical I tried it once training for a marathon. It helped keep my cardio up, but thats about it. It doesn't prepare you for the pounding in running and while it will be of some benefit biking and swimming will too so I would focus on those (but that's just me, and what I am doing).

Sorry to hear about the injuries out there! This is a tough sport, and it should remind us to treat our bodies well and take some time off.

I crashed on my bike almost two weeks ago and haven't been on it since because of injuries and bike shop issues. I'm in the big miles for IM Switzerland training myself and am not happy about being off the bike (and training in general) for two weeks. Luckily the LBS just called and the bike is ready. Now if I can get the gumption to get in a pace line gain...

Regardless, let your bodies heal and recover before you get back out there. And the time off will probably do you good.

With regards to jumping on the elliptical....I would actually stick to more biking/swimming as long as it doesn't aggravate the injury. From my experience, the elliptical doesn't add any value for preparing a marathon.

yeah, think I am just going to stick with swim and bike, I'm going for an MRI this weekend so hopefully I'll know where I stand in a few days, thanks for all advice, hope everyone else who's injured gets back on track sooner rather than later.
