What to do with tubes/tires?

So I went on my first real ride outside yesterday and did 40k. On the way home I ran over a rock and blew my tube. I was proud of myself for being able to change the tube and get back on the road, but now I have a dilema. What do I do with the tube?

Do LBS's take back damaged tubes and worn out tires and recycle them? Or am I stuck with a piece of rubber that has no further use other than a possibly a slingshot?

Cheers

it really depends on the damage you have on the tube. If the holes are up to 1/4 you can patch it with a patch kit. If they are larger you should not try it. maybe you could hold on to it so that you can learn how to patch. Just make a 1/4 in straight hole and patch it.

I also use dead tubes to hold my bikes on one of my bike racks. I think some places can recycle them as well? I am not sure though.

Old tires are usefull for shredding on a trainer. Old tubes, IMHO, aren't worth patching. Top-end latex tubes are $12, with most training tubes are half of that. Not getting many flats myself, it just doesn't seem worth patching them just to expose your ride to a higher probability of another flat or slow leak.

I like keeping a couple tubes around for muscle stretching. There's some great stretches you can do with a tube that you cant really do well without.

Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.

here's a company that recycles tubes, but only from bike shops (you need at least 45 tubes):

another one: http://www.broomfieldenterprise.com/news/2008/may/04/now-you-can-recycle...

and some other uses for tubes: http://www.instructables.com/id/10-of-1000-Uses-for-Old-Bicycle-Tubes/
