I am planning on replacing my crankset in the near future (I don't need a triple...) and what wondering what you guys know about cranklength. My current cranks are 172.5 and my inseam is 78cm with 47cm from top of kneecap to floor when seated. I am thinking about switching to 170s. I have looked at probably most of the websites out there that give various formulas etc... so I am basically just curious about your personal opinions. Standard sizes are 170, 172.5, and 175mm...

Some reasons to use shorter cranks would be to prevent knee trouble(haven't had much), the make it easier to spin faster (which means quicker accelerations - I do crits and rr's too so this is important), better cornering clearance... great for people who favor spinning

Some reason to use longer cranks are that they deliver more power (think torque is force*distance from pivot), are mostly used by sprinters and time trialists and gear mashers...

Again, just looking for personal opinions and I am curious what you use and think...

cat, i thought this was odd, i have some ultegra 04 cranks on my bike right now (172.5mm) . i bought some new cranks online. the FSA superlights (170mm) .... i have not installed them yet but the funny thing was that both cranks are exactly the same length ... i may take a pict of both to show everyone.

hmmm... 2.5mm is really not much at all, you might want to check again... i'm gonna get fsa cranks too since that's one of my cycling team's sponsors to replace my 02 or 03 ultegra triple... i'll get a compact crankset (50/34 - either the pro carbon elite or the energy) and then a 11-23 cassette instead of my 12-25 and then I actually end up with a harder max gear ratio than my 52/12 and only lose the easiest 3 gear ratios from my granny gear which I've only used like once in my life to get up gates pass in tucson... If I ever get strong enough to need bigger gears I can just replace the chainrings (you can get bigger ones for the 110 mm bcd)

do you get a break on them or do you have to buy them on your own ? you can find some good deals on ebay since FSA has a bunch of new ones out. i got mine with a ti bottom bracket ~brand new for 250 total !
