Time in between 2 Ironman races?

Dears

We are a couple of friends who are training for our first IM Distance on the 28th of June (Ironman France). All trainings are going really well. Living in Barcelona, we are all very keen to join the upcoming Challenge Maresme (50 km from Barcelona), another IM distance on the 4th of October - a much faster race than France. I.e. only 3 months after IM France.

Would this be absolutely suicide or at least very unhealthy or impossible?

By all means - if everything goes just fairly well, France would definitely not be the last IM for any of us. But waiting almost another year for the next seems like a loooong time.

Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Thomas

No Problem! Make sure you recover well from your first IM. Include active recovery and when you're ready start adding the miles back in. Taper as you did for your first IM.
It's not uncommom for people to do this...I know folks do, say, IMLP in July then an independant IM in late September. I've met atheletes that have done quite a number of IM's in a year. I often run several Ultramarathons in a year over 80 Km's (50 miles) and these are physically harder than an IM. It's all in how your training is going now. It is the training for an Ironman that is hard. The race day itself...not so much. Train well now and recover well later and you'll do fine!
Best of luck and keep us posted.

Hi Anton

thanks for your reply - surely the one I wanted to get ;)

Believe we´re training very well now under close guidance of very experienced people.

If anybody else wants to chip in on this, please feel free.

Thanks --

Thomas

Depending on how you recover, you should be fine. Just be aware that you might not have the same kind of day for the second race. And don't jump back into full training too soon after the first.

You can definitely do it. Just don't rush a return to running. Consider spending the first two weeks riding and swimming with a gentle return to weights. I've done 4 IM races in the last 10 months and have 2 more scheduled for the next 5 months. That schedule doesn't even begin to compare to the likes of Pro Petr Vabrousek who seems to do an IM race almost every few weeks. I am finding that fitness, especially endurance carries over very well between races. I actually train less per week with "frequent" races than infrequent races. The key is to not push yourself too hard with intensity workouts and back off with any sign of overuse injury. Pay attention to your nutrition and weight as well. Skipping meals and rest for more workouts quickly becomes a losing equation. Good luck but be warned, IM races quickly become addictive.

Thanks y'all. Sounds like Challenge Barcelona is pretty safe then. Will be on vacation the first 2 weeks after IM France, so will stick to swim/bike here...

Thanks again.. Take care & Best of luck !!
