when i was going through "my thing" last week, i ended up with 3 massages. one deep tissue massage by my physical therapist in my problem area (ankles)- that was 5 days before the race. then at 4 and 2 days before the race i went for general light overall massages just to get the blood flowing and loosen up.
worked great for me, because i felt limber on race day. i walked away from that event injury free- just a little stiffness in my hams and quads afterwards. my ankles actually feel better than ever. amazing!
forgot to mention... after "deep tissue" massage you can be pretty sore. i wouldn't want to risk that two days before a race. better to get that done earlier on in the week-so you have time to work out the soreness-i think.
I agree with Amy, deep tissue is a bit different than a sports workover. It can leave you a bit sore. So I'd go as far out as possible on the deep tissue if that's something you need, and get some of the more sports and muscle focus type stuff like Amy did as you get closer to the race.
On the nerves, just menatlly picture youself crossing that line as chris mentioned. You know you can do it, so just keep that mentality. erase stuff like "My problem is" and replace with "I just need to run the race I know I can". Anyway that's my Dr Phil $.02 :)

Hey Yall,
I've done my last long run before an upcoming Marathon on May 2. And already the pre-race jitters are setting in.
My problem is: I need to run a 3:30 to qualify for Boston, and I've run 24 in 3:03:25, so I know I have the speed, but I'm still on pins and needles.
It seems like every other day or so I go from "This will be a piece of Cake" to "There is no way I'll ever make it".
Any ideas, besides alcohol :D
Now, on to the Massage Question. How far away before a marathon should I consider getting a deep tissue massage to loosen up? Some of my running group say 2-3 days, others say 4-5. Anybody have experience with pre-race massages?
