I have just started riding with aero bars and wanted to know how long it takes to get use to the areobars. Is it common to be a little uncomfortable at first?
Thanks

Uncomfortable?
Is that due to the position?
or the fear from lack of balance?
from the saddle tip?
your wrists?

If it is from the position, try stretching exercises for the back, check the saddle position if the discomfort is there, or adjust the angle of the aero bars to take the strain off the forearms.

If it's just balance, then - practice, practice, practice.
How long depends on your ability, say anywhere from a week to never.
Sorry, that's just the way it is.
But I think most people learn to handle them. You learned to ride the bike in the first place. Suppose they had aerobars from the beginning back in 1872 or whenever?

Good luck,

It took me weeks to start to be comfortable with the steering. And at least three months before I was really comfortable in the position for long periods of time.

One year later, I'm on the aerobars most of the time, and am more comfortaible there than I am on the hoods or the tops. Like PoC says, "Practice, Practice, Practice." Start with the level straight-aways, and go from there.

Good luck.

rpatton,

i was uncomfortable at first as well--it was difficult for me to get my torso into the proper position. i stretch a little before a ride now, which helps. other than that, it will simply take several rides before you will get used to them...so, be patient and assuming you're fitted correctly on your bike you will eventually get used to the bars.

Thanks for the responses. I think since it is a different position it will take a little getting use to. Just wanted to make sure that others have felt the same way.

I recently did a long ride using the aerobars and everything worked great. The only problem I had was that my elbows hurt every once in a while. Is that common and just takes some getting used to?
Thanks

Where on your elbows is the pain? Make sure your bars are positioned correctly. You want them pretty much horizontal- only crazy folks point them downward or upward, and I wouldn't mess with that unless you can get into a wind tunnel or something. Also check to see how much pressure you are putting on your arms while in the aero position- you may need to change your saddle too. Good luck!

Happy Training!
