XTERRA West Cup
2. I need to practice using my Garmin under the swim cap. (Had it working, messed with it, it stopped working.)
3. I need to do more strength training. Worry about speed later.
That's a sweet looking course, pics. Do you live out in Vegas? Silverman/Rock N' Rock Vegas intrigues me . . . Anyway, re: #2 - You put your watch under your swim cap and swim with it? And re: #3, if you DNFd b/c you didn't make the cut-offs, why are you 'worrying about speed later'? Seems like that should be your priority. How is increasing your strength training going to help you get faster? However, given that your blog states that you started at 315 and you are down to 268 and you want 40 more, weight loss will help your speed (same force - weight = more speed). Good job with that!
I'm in AZ - went up to Vegas for the race.
On #2 - yeah, I was hoping to get the gpx data, time, etc.
On #3 - I think I need to focus on strength and endurance, and speed will come with that. The sharp and numerous inclines were one thing that really hurt me in this race - I didn't have the endurance to push all the way up, so I had to hike a bike quite a bit. If I can put out a little more power for a longer period of time, it will get me up those hills. Downhill, I'm fast - what do you expect when you have 300lbs being pulled by gravity versus the 175lbs of other competitors? Uphills - I struggle. If I can correct the uphills, time won't be so much of an issue. Am I thinking about this in the wrong way?

sorry, about the time cutoff...did you run it out on your own clock anyway?
it sounds like you're making a lot of progress, tho!
2. just leave it for the bike
3. just work on losing the weight...if you can carry around 300#, your strength is probably ok!
4. Was this all during the race??! do (or get) a pre-race tuneup every race!!
5. Always a good idea
6. YES!
Nice pics, seems like a cool race!
Bummer on the run. But it sounds like you had a great race otherwise. 2800 ft of elevation change is no joke.
Congrats!
I think I can, I think I can, I think I can...
thanks all - it was a very cool race.
I thought about doing the run off-course, but the rest of my family was ready for lunch and it was a convenient excuse.

I put a post with some pictures (waiting to see if Brightroom has any of me) from the race on my site here.
This race was a new and longer distance for me - 1,500m swim, 18mile bike, 10k run. I finished the swim somewhere around 40-45mins. Not good by most standards but a best for me. I was pretty pleased with my swim - I churned the whole way: no breaks, only minimal variance from course, and no thoughts of desperation.
The bike took forever - I underestimated the multiple quick elevation gains. Total elevation gain per the Garmin was just under 2,800'.
By the time I finished the bike, I only had 15 mins until the course closed. So, I was cut for time from the run. It was a bummer.
The day before the race I weighed in at 268 - so I was down a total of 47 lbs for the race. I'm going to try to drop another 40 for next year.
Lessons learned:
1. I need to practice swimming more (technique, technique, technique).
2. I need to practice using my Garmin under the swim cap. (Had it working, messed with it, it stopped working.)
3. I need to do more strength training. Worry about speed later.
4. I need to learn more about the mechanics of my bike. I had my chain break, both of my derailleurs were off, and my rear brake was borderline useless.
5. If there is a way, I need to pre-ride the course, always.
6. Swim cap worked much better above the ears (lesson learned from last race).
7. Roctane is good stuff. Seems to be more potent but shorter lived.
All in all, I'm not disappointed with my performance. Considering I skipped any serious training for all of Jan, Feb, and most of Mar, I'm pleased with the progress I've made. Time to take it a bit more serious now, though.
Dom and the volunteers from Sunset Racing did a bang up job on this race, btw. I ran into him multiple times on the course and at the resort, and he was a very cordial and supportive guy.
