Hi,

Due to closeness to venues (olympic pool 5 min from home and work) and weather where I live, I have been training 6 days a week, 2 sports per day, (except on sunday where I only train 1 sport and I rest monday).

I bike 4 times a week, run 4 times a week and swim 3 times a week.

I am wondering if I should swim 4 times a week and maybe run only 3.

A guy I know that has done various ironman, told me that in the bike is where you can really improve your overall time, while with swimming you can improve your overall time but by much smaller amuont.

Should I do 4 swimming sessions per week and do 3 running sessions only?

Thanks,

Eric

No. You should keep up your run volume while still focussing on cycling if you want to make gains in time. IM swim = 1 to 1.5 hr. IM Marathon = 3 hr to 5 hr if running, up to 7 hrs if you're undertrained, have physical issues, or otherwise need to walk most of it.

Getting into proper run shape can take well over an hour off your run. Proper swim shape? maybe 20-30 minutes, even less if you have good swim form. You can get in adequate swim training on 3 sessions per week (or 2) but you're not going to be marathon ready on those same 3.

+1 to xc800runner. Keep your run and bike volume, thats where your biggest gains/losses will be felt.

Maybe add some easy miles on the bike on your rest day.

Top AG (Sub 10hr IM) once told me you can't win an IM on the swim but you can lose it. He put more hours in the pool than most because less effort translated into much better times on the bike and run. So even though the 2 to 5 min you may improve by training the swim a bit more doesn't translate to all that much, the way you feel coming out of the water can make a big difference on the bike and run.

+1 so far, but it's not just about how many sessions, but how much time. We've all seen previous posts that outline something like 20% swim, 50% bike, and 30% run total weekly time volume. Such a formula takes the guesswork out. Yes, you stand to make the biggest time gains from improving your cycling vs. improving your swim. Lose the extra swim session and keep the run.

It also depends where your strengths are -- like j.qualle said the swim is not just about how fast you do it, but how tired going that fast makes you for the rest of the day. However, 3 swims is often plenty to keep your feel for the water and swim fitness. If you are a superrunner, it might be something to consider occasionally. If you struggle on the run, don't give one up.
