To me it is another level my body is not capable of. I think what you guys/girls do is awesome.

They're waiting Garen. All you have to do is go.

REALLY?! Garen? you do IRONMANs, and you think there is a level your body cannot achieve? If you WANT it, you can do it, no?
Taper Naked
I have thought about it but I don't feel the same motivation to do it as I did with marathons and the IM. The part I struggle with is I can't get past feeling like I will be wrecking myself. I understand that this isn't the case and that ultra's are fine, physiologically, if trained for properly. Maybe one day in the future this will become my next obsession. In the meantime I will ultra vicariously through Anton, Beads, Star, and the other Trifuelers who go 50K and beyond.

see, that sounds more like it...you CAN do it, you are just choosing NOT to right now...Ironman :)
Taper Naked
I can understand that...My Mom used to dish up vegetables a lot when I was a kid and I'd tell her..."I like them but I don't want any right now." Now, I can't get enough!
I know lots of folks for whom IM's became no big deal so they started running Ultras.

Well Garen you can vicariously hurt now.
Cayman and I attempted the Muddy Marathon.
Rough course lots of hills and some areas which you climbed a steep hillside with help from your hands.
4 loops 6.55 miles each.
The first loop we missed something and completed that in about 1:15 and they look surprised when we reached the checkpoint.
The second loop we were on course and it hurt and that was about 2:07 but he let us go out for the 3rd
The 3rd loop was okay until the aforementioned hands and feet climbs.
Cayman was hurtin' and so was I my calves and hammys were knotted so badly and we had to do a lot of walking.
We finished the 3rd loop in just about 2:30 for a total of about 5:50.
He offered to let me go out for the 4th and I almost tried and felt my legs trembling.
The BBQ was going and we saw beer flowing, so we DNF'd
There is still the NJ Marathon tomorrow, which is thankfully flat and paved. ;-)
Got to pack and get going.
I will give more details on Monday
Come over to the dark(ultra)side Garen, we are waiting. ;-)
BTW Turkey swamp 50 k in early August.....
'Nothing to it, but to do it!'
Too bad about the DNF. Sounds like a really tough course. Good luck tomorrow.

Discretion is the better part of valor. Or something like that. Anyway, smart choice and on to the next challenge.

Good on you for listening to the body Scott! Like my wise mentors on here say, it is not about any one day but about a lifestyle ;)
Miles of Life --- Powered by MarkyV
It was a tough 20 miles on Saturday. More like an adventure race than a trail run.
Several people described the course as "F***ing Brutal" and I agree.
I couldn't help but listen to my body since it was yelling at me! ;-)

Smart move lad. I suspected a high probability...Listening to your body IS being a smart athlete.
It has been my experience that if you want to really have a "sporty"weekend, pick two easy Mary's or a 50k and a Century the next day or make a real sporty weekend of it and do 24 hour run or bike!

Since this was the inaugural event I had no idea how it would go. I have done trail marathons before and this was way above and beyond that.
Yes, there will be a next time I try back to back but it will be 2 flat races.
I still got almost 6 hours on the trail, so it was quite the workout!

Trying to do back to back, Muddy Marathon on Saturday & NJ Marathon on Sunday
I think Cayman is joining me on Saturday
Anybody else doing one or the other?
