As they say ... it is not if but when

It is not if, but when you crash.

Did mine was yesterday - Was out in Madison with Endurance Nation starting a 3 day epic ride weekend.

An hour into the first days ride - I did my best George Hincapie imitation - meaning my stem broke. We were doing upper 30's on a nice little decline. Then snap - an 'Oh crap' reaction as I see the front wheel turn as I am ejected over the top.

Good thing was no broken collar bones! Basically just cuts and abrasions (ankle, both knees, hip, both hands, elbow, shoulder and back) and a nice whack on the helmet.

So after getting picked up on the side of the road - got back to my truck - cleaned up a bit and headed back home - tho on the way was on the phone with my bike shop to see how quick they could get me going again - but they want to do a full check since it was in a crash - which is a good idea - and the derailleur may be whacked a bit too...

I was thinking the same thing. So how does that happen? (Very glad you're OK).

Not sure - perhaps a defect - or sweat corroded?

I'm thinkin' defect. If it snapped off at the face plate, could be bad bolts. It's got ME running to the basement to check out my stems!

Crashing is bad in so many ways. Lost out on a good trainin weekend... time off bike while it's fixed... day to day pain of dealing with bruises... sore muscles from the crash...

Hopefully you're back on the saddle and feeling good soon.

Holy cow. Glad you are all right, RV. I'd be interested to hear what the shop thinks about the stem.

Be sure to get a new helmet!

(And if it's any consolation, I don't think you would have wanted to be out riding today anyway. I spent a part of my ride under a bridge this morning completely soaked, waiting for the lightning to subside).

Glad it wasn't worse for you! And I'll be curious to hear the why, too.

Glad you're okay, that sounds scary! I'm also curious as to how such a thing could happen. I bet a lot of trifuelers are reflexively checking stems about now...

Wow! It sucks enough when you crash cause you cant handle your bike, it sucks even worse when a situation is out of your control. That must have been a real odd feeling second in between the stem breaking and you realizing it. Isnt it funny how many thought can run through your head in an extremely short time span?

Good thing you know how to fall! Hope you get back on the road soon!

Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.

That is so true. First it was confusion/disbelief - then - it was more of well - I can't crash - I can pull this out - then resignation that this really stinks.

Hopefully tomorrow will know more - the LBS is closed today.

Glad to hear you are ok! Hope you have quick healing and that Specialized takes care of the bike so you aren't sitting to long!

just saw this thread...wow!

i never thought about it, but, boy, when the stem goes...it's not just your steering but brakes too (i guess gravity solves both those issues...eeesh!)

GLAD YOU'RE OK, RV!!

It was installed beginning of last year. So not old.

The LBS speculates that I have corrosive sweat.
Almost sounds like a superpower --- so says Corrosive Sweat Man!
When in the pain cave - I do have towels covering everything and wipe it down afterwards - but apparently not enough...

Of course they do. See, now it's YOUR fault.

Yeah I don't by the corrosive sweat thing really... sounds way too much like putting it all on you. I wonder if that stem ever had any recalls on it, or how long they had it sitting in their shop before it was on your bike, or if it was ever dropped or anything while there, etc.
