Garmin 405 or 405CX & PowerTap Pro Wireless Compatability - Tri start to finish!
I would wait for the new Garmins to come out -- 310xt... waterproof and longer battery life, wearable on a wrist, and ANT+ compatible, and can read power data, too.
I have heard mixed reviews for the 405 series and the usability of their unique user interface.

Thank you for your response. When is the 310xt due out?
Don't watch what I do, just listen to what I say. LOL!
I believe it and the 405CX are expected in the May/June timeframe, but I'm not sure.

Why no Polar? I love all Polar products!!!! If they arent working why don't you get them fixed under the warranty? Or have you had them too long? If you have had them too long, then upgrade, the new rs watches with the s3 stride sensor, its great!

ok the new info on the 310xt is confusing (from add from trisports.com). Looks like you need a footpod for running pace (also optional cadence sensor for bike)
UGGGGGGGG

+1. I got the 405 & wish I had known about the 310xt.

Their info just isn't written well then, or is written really well if the goal is to make you buy stuff you don't necessarily need ;)
"Forerunner 310XT tracks your position precisely with GPS satellite data and records distance, pace, heart rate (optional), power data (from ANT+™-enabled third-party power meters) and more." (from the Garmin description)
It has an optional footpod, but you don't need it. It will use GPS to do the running pace and distance when outdoors, but offers a footpod I think mostly for folks who like to use the same watch on the treadmill, or perhaps for track workouts (with that many close turns the errors in GPS are enough that there will be a slight difference).

wow, i hadn't seen that yet...that thing is not pretty!

THANK YOU for the clarification!!!!!!! That totally bummed me out when I read that, because you know this is just the thing I have waited for!

ME TOO!!!!
Did you get that pre-order email? I'm not gonna, but I DID think about it :)
Taper Naked
I did get the email. I am just going to wait, I am sure I can get it when it comes out.
The footpod is for the treadmill and for bike cadence, just to confirm the above.
The 405 (does not) and 405CX will NOT support Power Meters, even with the updates this summer. I was able to validate this with one of the lead Garmin engineers this weekend at the Boston Marathon Expo. We talked about it and the different firmware components for quite a while.

We've been using a Forerunner 305 for the past couple of years. The only downsides have been the battery life and inability to swim with them. The 310XT addresses both those problems. We've pre-ordered. What is particularly good is the ability to program workouts based on HR, pace, speed, distance or any combination. it really does make for smart training.
You don't need the speed/cadence sensor for the bike unless you want to measure cadence or collect distance data when on a windtrainer.
You don't need the footpod for distance or speed when running unless you wnt to collect that info on a treadmill.
The 305 and 310XT will collect speed and distance data from GPS signals.
Timex, Polar, Suunto are good, but you need to strap various bits and pieces to achieve the same goal as the Forerunner.
One final point. It is not a watchto use for telling the time. It is a training device

This is great news! I couldn't find that on the website - but that really excites me, as I use my FR 305 for primarily this capacity. I structure most of my training now and have been a bit disappointed that I couldn't use multiple or in some cases just different variables etc.
I've got a whole bunch of workouts all created in Training Center and will be psyched if I can just transfer them and then modify them up for the variables!
I'm gonna have to look into this now...

I am trying to find a HRM that is NOT a Polar product and will provide pace info on the run. I have a PowerTap Pro Wireless w/ Heart Rate for the bike and I'm very happy with that. However, I am using a Sigma HRM due to the fact that the thousands of $'s that I've spent on Polar products, none are currently functioning as they should.
So I'm looking for a watch that will provide distance and pace for the run that has the ANT+ wireless technology for my heartrate and pace on the run. It looks like the Garmin 405 will give me what I need and was wondering if any have used this combination. Is the GPS function accurate??
Theoretically, I should be able to start my watch, with HR strap on at the start of the swim (not expecting HR data during the swim), get on the bike, wake up the PowerTap computer, have it find my heartrate and provide data (which it should with the ANT+ technology), and then get on to the run all while the Garmin 405 is running and giving me the races total time and still reading my heartrate. As I start to run it will start providing my pace, etc.
I hope this makes sense. Again, many have promised this functionality, but now that I've got into the world of power/watts on the bike, I'm getting limited and POLAR has no place in my world any longer. I guess my heartrate is POLAR incompatible, and I can't see changing heartrate straps in transition.
If it won't do this, then I won't use heartrate at all on the bike in race and live with it. Then save some money by not buying more TRI Junk.
Thanks in advance!
Don't watch what I do, just listen to what I say. LOL!
