the basics: a swimsuit you can ride and run in comforably (maybe a trisuit but not always necessary) some brands zoot, desoto, voler, titanwear, louis garneau,
goggles, a bike - a mtn bike or hybrid is fine for your first tri, a helmet and good running shoes.
try different brands of all the above get the ones that you like. good luck and have fun

Get a Timing Chip Strat, makes the swim, bike, run that much more enjoyable!

Have fun and good luck!

if a race uses a timing chip don't they usually include the strap too?

they do, but a neoprene one is more comfortable and it's rare that they provide comfy ones

Whatever you buy, buy good stuff. Cheap stuff is exactly what you pay for it. It ends up wearing out needing replacement in the long run.

For a shorter race I wouldn't worry about a timing strap -- just use what they give you for now.

Essentials:

  • something to wear (tri shorts and top work well for races, but a swimsuit for training in is good since you don't want to wear the tri outfit in chlorine too often)
  • goggles (the race will provide a cap if one is needed)
  • bike
  • bike helmet
  • water bottle on bike
  • sunglasses for the bike, and maybe the run
  • shoes to bike in (these can be the same as your running shoes to start)
  • run shoes
  • socks (if you prefer the shoes with them)
  • visor or hat for the run if you like that
  • if you are a girl (guessing not by the screen name) a good sports bra
  • if you have long hair a way to secure it back that fits under a helmet

For particular brands and styles of these, there are many out there and most brands are liked by someone, so try some on and see what is comfortable for you. All of it needs to be able to move with you without causing discomfort.

And welcome to the sport and site :)

Yeah, they do. I used it once, found out that it cut into my leg and was not comfortable to wear and then decided to get a neoprene one, or better yet, not forget it at home. They are not that expensive and they will make your more comfortable.

One less thing to worry about.

+1 on the chip strap. I use a RoadID as mine, but it's far more comfortable than the nylon velcro razor blade I've seen handed out at races. I've seen more than a few people with bloody ankles thanks to those cheap straps.

Bunch of sissies! :) (If it's cutting into your leg, it's on too tight)

Let's keep in mind the OP's question. New to tri, looking for gear ideas. I have to assume we're trying to keep this list to things you need, meaning need. +1 to Kylie's list. You don't need a chip strap or race belt for your first event.
