I know, another knee topic, but this doesn't match previous posts I read. I'm new to triathlon training but have a lot of experience running in the past. About 2 weeks back, I lifted on my legs and proceeded to do an easy 6 mile run the next day. The following day, I noticed a soreness about 2 inches below my right kneecap, almost like a bruise. I did some light biking and running with regular swim workouts the next week but the pain still was there. Also, my left knee started to feel slight discomfort at this point. I've just been in the pool this week with about the same results. No pain during activity, but there is a stiffness and I can notice discomfort afterwards and knees are now cracking a lot. Any thoughts about proceeding. Could this be from straining while doing lunges or overtraining???? Thanks for any thoughts.

First of all, if you're
First of all, if you're lifting legs, be sure you're using proper form to avoid injury (especially to the knees).
For squats, leg press, etc. the general rule of thumb is to ensure that your knees never go past your toes and that your legs reach a 90 degree angle at your lowest point.
Another possible issue could involve striking the ground with your knee while you do the lunges. This should always be avoided - not only can the impact (especially with added weight) be damaging, but your muscles go from a loaded to completely relaxed to loaded state very quickly if your knee rests on the ground at all. A lot of people I've observed have a tendency to go down too fast and strike the knee, then push off with a sudden effort instead of controlling both the descent and ascent. This is related to bench press - improper technique involves dropping the bar quickly and bouncing off the chest whereas proper form requires a controlled descent and constant effort.
Could also result from a sudden increase in mileage or a cumulative effect of running in dead shoes for a while (but given your previous running experience, it seems unlikely)
Hope this helps!

how old are you? when does the knee pain hurt? Give us a bit more info...and do you stretch?

I'm 30 years old, I get the pain/stiffness after the workouts throughout the day. It never hurts when I strike the ground, there is pain in bending more than anything. On a pain scale, I would rate it a 4 out of 10, 10 being very painful. It is just an uncomfortable pain. I do know I don't want knee problems down the road so I am trying to be preventative. I do stretch religously pre and post workout.
