HR rate monitors on race day . . . G 305

I use a garmin 305 in training and would like to gather data while I "participate" in races. More so I can see what is going on and make sure that the excitement of the event does not trick me into going beyond what I am capable of. My plans are to finish, don't care about anything else.

Are there any tricks ot tips folks know if in dealing with a g 305 in t1??

I am thinking I could somehow secute the back strap and have the HRM and watch waiting in t1. Zip down my tri shirt and attach the HRM, put on the watch then do what I have to do to get the bike rolling.

Tape likely won't work because of water, but I was thinking I might be able to use a couple safety pins inside the shirt to hold the strap in place, then attach the unit.

Reading these forums has shown me that most problems have been encountered and folks have come up with slick solutions only experience could bring. I have none of that so I am hoping someone else has already solved this one!

My first sprint is May 17, then I am hoping for an Oly June30.

Correction, oly june 28

The times I have used a HRM strap during a race I wore the strap for the swim. Then in T1 I just had to put on the Garmin and I was off. Will you have a top or a wetsuit on for the swim? If so, wearing it should work.

I don't think pins will be needed to keep the strap in place. I've never worn mine in the water, but I see lots of people with them, and no pins, tape, glue, staples, nails, or screws are needed.

Wear the strap in the swim. Or, it would take :02 seconds to put the strap on in T1. Don't make it more complicated than that (ie, tape, pins). Transitions go fastest when simplified.

As long as youve got a layer over it, wearing the strap for the swim shouldnt be an issue. Ive seen people duct tape them to their body for use without a layer over them, but i wouldnt exactly recommend that.

Putting the strap on could be a bit fiddley in T1 after getting out of the water, especially if its cold. Youve already got to deal with a watch strap and a helmet clip, dont add more things for your shakey hands to deal with.

DO NOT WEAR THE WATCH IN THE WATER. It says its water resistant, it means rain. I effed mine pretty well by doing this and i was lucky that it worked fine once it dried out.

Good luck at the races!

I know the watch is a no no. I plan on having a layer, an LG shark2 top. Was not sure if that would soak it enough to cause problems or not. 30 seconds to put it one does not effect my race plan what so ever as I simply want to finish. I don't want to spend completely unnecesary time anywhere but really time or place is not an issue. I just want to have fun! But would love the data. And the warning if the excitement is getting me to push so hard I won't be able to finish or would be forced to finish uncompfortably.

I don't mean to hi jack the tread here but I have a question. Does the salt water ruin the battery ports? Generally water and batteries don't mix.

No, issues with salt water and the battery ports as long as you clean them at some point. A simple eraser will fix that issue. I used mine on a multi-day kayak camping journey in the South Pacific without any issues and tons of salt spray.

Oh, and I always wear my Garmin HRM strap under my wetsuit or under my tri top. Never had any issues. If you somehow manage to lose it during a race...then look at the bright side - a shark decided to eat that instead of you.

If you wear tightly, it should not be a problem (under the top). or you could screw it to your ribs. just joking.

As a newbie to the tri world, gearing up for my first race, based on the things I have read and heard of folks doing to save a couple seconds, I am very glad you said "just Joking". Else at this point I really would not have been sure!

I think this might give you a hand for using the 301 in your race.

(Funny, my page). :)

I would recommend against using the Forerunner in the swim during a race. While it's fine to use in training (under the swim cap - DO NOT PUT IT ON YOUR WRIST - it will break it) - I think it's too much to think about during a race. Especially with others bonking you on the head during the start of the race. But that's just my two cents, others may want all the data from all segments.

I've actually been meaning to finish up a post on 'How to race with the 305' that talks through all these logistics. I'll try and finish it up in the next few days.
