How many of you run with the running shoes you get as-is and how many of you replace the stock insert with an aftermarket one? I'm trying out "Superfeet" shoe inserts. They feel very different from the ones that come with the shoe. They feel less cushionny - in fact they like a stiff board. I'm not sure how they are supposed to help.

I am not experiencing any problems with them but I'm not used to how they feel. I don't really notice a difference in performance or soreness level.

I have always ran with shoes as-is but have been always wondered about running with inserts.

So you dont see or feel a positive difference?

I run with my running shoes as-is ... but I am a huge fan of Superfeet insoles. They solved a bad case of Plantar Fasciitis for me. I used them in my running shoes for a while, and they were okay ... but a sales guy at REI suggested that my problem might have been caused by poor support in most of my other shoes. Now I have several sets of Superfeet that I rotate into everything else ... cycling shoes, everyday shoes, dress shoes, hikers, etc. I haven't had any signs of Plantar Fasciitis in well over 2 years now.

You are right ... they are not "cushionny", their theory is that you don't need extra cushioning, you need proper support, and you need to have the arch support in the right spot.

My running shoes are Nike Free so about the opposite of support - but I wore Superfeet 100% of the time I was snowboarding. They are great for long days in shoes/boots. I think gshuldes has it right - they are more support than cushion.

I run with mine as-is...I've never had an issue with my current shoes (which I've been in same model for 5+ years), and I have flat feet. My dad had suggested looking into some inserts, more for knee health in the future than anything, and he's a PT, so I figured I'd give it a shot. I tried superfeet, didn't notice a big difference with them in, and ran probably 150 miles with them including my last marathon. After the marathon, though I started getting hip pain...ended up taking a month off. When I started up again I went back to as-is, but have had no issues since.

Granted, there were a lot of variables that could have caused my injury, so I don't blame the superfeet for it, but now I'm just of the "if it's not broke, don't fix it" philosophy for running shoes.

I just switched from superfeet to these. Basically you get to try them for free.

I don't need them in my running shoes but they are awesome in my bike shoes and my everyday shoes.

I have custom inserts that my chiropractor got me. They sent a mold of my feet to Foot Levelers. I am convinced they are one of the reason I can run since I have very little cartilage in one knee. I have very flat feet so the insert felt significantly different. It took me weeks to get used to just walking on them through the day, but I think they are great now. Unfortunately they are the reason I must wear socks at least on the run, but if I didn’t have them I probably wouldn’t be running anyways.

for those people who mentioned that they dont feel anything different with the superfeet insoles, that is exactly the point of their product, according to some sales reps that i had a clinic with yesterday. the more "invisible" the product feels, the better. your body will thank you for using their product (as opposed to factory insole) later on down the road, and help you to recover. the insole is proven to make you a more efficient runner, and with that efficiency comes speed.....

I first ran with my shoes as-is then got orthotics and only had it one shoe so I needed an insert to balance the difference in height. So I just purchased what was cheaper and felt comfortable to me.

Before I got my orthotics I always got a new pair of insoles (SofSoles) for my shoes. Yes it added another $20 but that crappy insert that comes with the shoe just didn't do it.

I run with mine as is. I have tried the inserts, but only found them to make a difference when I had skimped on the shoes. Buying good shoes for my feet makes insoles unneccesary for me.
