Discomfort in hip

Hi all. Seems that about this time each year (at least last year it happened as well but in other hip area) I get some kind of aggravation from increasing my run mileage and intensity.

Wondering if anyone has had similar problems so here's my best description. Discomfort only occurs at a specific range of motion and then goes away. It feels a little deep into the hip area, but also kind of generalized in the buttock and sometimes near the groin area. It is most noticeable if I say stand on one leg and balance in a specific position. But then goes away. A single Advil can make it shut up (but I don't train like that).

I somewhat recently increased my mileage and since its slowwwwly starting to get warmer I've been getting out and doing varied terrain runs (low grade hills both up and down). And this seems to have started somewhere around then.

Anyone?
cheers

My guess is a leg length discrepancy. I've dealt with one for 30 odd years...solved with orthotics or a heel lift. I'd start by seeing a Podiatrist.
Your pain sounds exactly like me and a few others I know...I'm fine if my weekly milage is short..but increase it past 30 and I start having trouble without a lift or orthotics.

ever have any clicking or popping in your hip? any xrays? seen a doctor about it?

could be a torn labrum...could be arthritis...could be a number of different disorders...maybe cam type impingment....pincer impingment...or like anton said it could be a leg length issue...

i would say go get it checked out if it continues to bother you...treating the symptoms rarely ever helps the cause of the problem...

I have gone through a multitude of hip issues. Few things....
If you have clicking or snapping as Noah said above, that's something you need to look into with a doc b/c that can get serious. That happens if your IT bands are way too tight, they get inflamed when you stress them, then they grind over the bone. That said, you can correct this with quality stretching.

It's probably worth a trip to an orthopedist to make sure you don't have any defective parts. Get a quick xray to make sure your hip & socket are built correct and in good shape, and to make sure you don't have any bursitis in there which can be causing pain. Bursitis is the painful inflammation of the bursae gel sacs around the joint that take the brunt of running impact.

Aside from that...how well are you stretching? Last time this happened to me, I thought my hip was screwed up bad...I could barely move it hurt so bad. After a few really simple leg lift type exercises given by the doc & therapist to help strengthen, and a good bit of stretching twice a day every day, it made all the difference.

Assuming it's an IT band issue, they can be hard to stretch. Google it for imagery, this might be hard to visualize. Start by buying a foam roller to get your band loose and to help out with that deep pain in your butt. Also you can lay on your back, cross one leg over the other, and pull your shin towards you...you should feel this in the outside of your hip. So say this is for your right leg...you lay on your back, your left leg with foot on the ground, knee bent at about ninety degrees. Cross your right leg over as if you were sitting "indian style", then grab your right shin and pull that leg towards your face.

Also can try sitting on the ground, have your one leg in front of you and bent towards your inside, then put the other leg all the way back behind you like you are going to lay on your stomach. So it's kind of like you are doing the splits the length of your body. Keep your bent knee under your chest as you lay, your other all the way back. You should feel that in your hip too (the hip of the bent leg).

There are alot of good videos or visuals online if you look up IT stretches, as im sure mine are hard to comprehend.

Just my .02..

Havnet gone to a doc yet. Basically asking around first so I don't go Chicken Little yet.
The pain is not as severe as some have experienced and it does subside. Stretching wise I do daily stretches to keep my hams and glutes loose, very similar to what you mention grosso (stop laughing back there). And while I will do some very light warmup stretching before my runs, I typically save my stretching for after the run.

Maybe a trip to the doc is in order.

cheers all

could also be you need more strength in your gluteus medius

cyclists don't use them as much as runners and upping your running may be bringing attention to a muscle imbalance

these exercises help

Well after an Xray (clear) and an MRI the MRI showed I have a minor Stress Fracture. On the compression side. Doc says on a scale of 1-10 its a 1 or a 2. 3 weeks off of running for certain then a follow up. Had my Oprah moment there for a few minutes but now will be working on my swim and bike more...

cheers

At least you can keep moving, and caught it before it was bad! Enjoy the swim and bike and we'll see you again running soon :)
