Hello,
Just a small note for everyone to remember to be carefull out there on the road. My wife's two cousins were out for a ride (training for a 100 mile charity ride) and coming back from a local bike store when they were mowed down by a drunk driver. It all happened at 3:00 in the afternoon. The driver was a 64 year old women who was denied buying a box of wine from a liquor store. She was still in her pajamas (chrismas pj's to be exact) and was clearly intoxicated. She left the store cleary pissed because she hit them going 45 mph in a 30 zone. She drove up onto a grassy section and hit one and then the other. To make matter worse she left the seen and went home, but first she drove around the accident 2-3 times. To many witnesses and she was arrested shortly thereafter. They are both ok, luckily, one just had bumps and bruises and the other broke her pelvis in two spot and had to be sent to a special womens hospital in the city. She will have to learn to walk with a walker for the next six weeks and who knows how much physical therapy. All of this plus two weeks ago our friend with her three children were hit by a drunk driver, again in the afternoon on a tuesday, he was going 70 and plowed into their car, all were ok and left the hospital that day. Since then my wife has joined MADD and will be in a benefit walk and will go to these trials. I am sorry that I have to write something like this but it is sad that we cannot enjoy the outdoors with having to look over our shoulder wondering if that driver behind us is the one. Thanks for letting me vent a little. Erik

Wow I'm so glad they were ok! It's a scary world out there... and I just try to remember that when I get behind a wheel as well.

I am sorry to hear of your misfortunes Eric. As a police officer working nights, I see a lot of drunk drivers out there, and that being said, it makes me cringe thinking how many of them might be coming up behind me during my rides and runs. I pray your wife's cousins recover fast and full, and I hope the book is thrown at this drunk, as it is not the first time that she has ever driven drunk, I dont care what drunk drivers say, I have heard it all, and it is never the first, and I doubt it will end here if they dont throw the book her way!

How awful, but glad to hear in this case all are among the living! You know, my wife was telling me yesterday (I already won't ride at night) about how I shouldn't ride on St. Patty's day because of the extra drunk folks out there....I said, it's 5pm...still light out! Thanks for the reminder.

Just keep spinning....spinning, spinning....uh, do I know you?

I wish we could implement what is already available. For everyone to have to blow up a straw before driving. This is beeing studied in Japan right now. It works. And people would not be able to drive their car intoxicated. I hope this becomes the law SOON.

That is horrible! I have heard about many accidents and in almost every case a drunk driver is involved.
Though, recently on my regular run at about 11:00 am, some guy almost ran me over with his car, if i didn't stop. He did stop at the red light only a bit further then the stop sign itself.

I'm glad they are ok, but we all have to be careful whether we we biking, running or driving. Weather is getting warmer and some people driving all of a sudden forget how to drive, they forget that there are people on the streets, i noticed it happens often with the first snow and with the first warm day.

I was hit 2 years ago by a sober driver who just didn't see me. I was going straight, he made a left turn across my path, I slammed head-first into the side of his truck (one week before my son was born - my very pregnant wife was not pleased to get the call from the hospital!!!)

That was my last commute, I only ride to train now, on much quieter roads. It's a shame we don't have safe places to ride (so-called "bike paths" don't count - joggers, rollerbladers, dogs, kids... ugh)

The device that won't let you start the car can be installed by the court if you have been deemed a risk by the court.
That wouldn't be a bad feature to be installed preventively but it costs$$.

Hope your family is recovering well. ;-)

it really is a shame how these accidents happen, but you should be thankful that they aren't, god forbid, paralyzed or even dead. This nearly happened to me the other day and ever since i've been crazily aware of oncoming or incoming traffic. I'm sorry that this happened.

Thanks for the support everyone. They are doing allright everything considered. I was just in that same spot 15 minutes earlier and just missed the accident. I just needed to talk about it. Thanks again.

I'm glad they are all alive, even though it sounds like a long road to recovery for one. You don't really expect drunk drivers in the middle of the afternoon but sadly I guess they can be around at any time. One night this winter when I was riding home I had a car come across the bike lane I was riding in, miss me by a hair, drive up on the sidewalk, nearly miss a utility pole, bounce back down into the street and peel off. Scary stuff.
