5 Gallon Bucket in Transition
Depends how much space each person gets, and that is different at each race.
I also always try not to have to sit down -- only when I get caught up in my wetsuit or my shoes won't go on and I'm about to fall over do I sit.

Lots of times in the race info there will be some indication of what is or is not acceptable. In really crowded races you might forgo it. You an pack your gear in the bucket and see which way the wind is blowing on race day and decide then. Either way it goes...always be considerate of those around you...even though they might not be!

Leave it at home. You can remove a wetsuit without sitting down. You can put on shoes without sitting down. Less clutter in transition, the better. Its just one more thing to trip over, knock over, and get in the way.
Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.
+1 just practice your transitions without sitting down. You'll get faster and wont need to worry about sitting down.

The bucket sure makes a nice way to haul everything into transition with my bike when my sweet husband/support crew can't be there. Sounds cheesy but I have started putting the helmet race number stickers on the bucket after each race. Hope to just cover it up with numbers.
I have friends who swear by The Bucket. Myself I'm far too clumsy, I know I'd end up knocking it into someone else's gear.
One advantage here in the PacNW is that they bring a lid and if it's raining they put stuff like dry socks in the bucket and they actually stay dry.

If you have a beach entry/ exit swim the bucket will come in most handy!!! Fill the bucket 1/4 full of water to wash the sand off your feet then toss the water out and sit on. Definitely not something needed for shorter races, but could be handy in longer ones.
Ugg if the people around me in TA pour water all over the place and it got on my shoes/socks I'd be rather annoyed....
When I do beach exit races I just ride without socks, and the dirt/sand dries and falls off on the bike. Using water to clean off your feet works, but I don't really find it necessary.

I use a 5 gallon to tote all my stuff in and out of transition. I also use it to wash off my feet. I never sit in transition, but I suppose if I needed to for some reason (cramping, etc) I would turn it over. I just fill the bucket with about and inch or two of water.
My bucket is the best cost per benefit item I own. I sit on it, but not during T1 and T2.
I don't like the idea of people with buckets with water in them in transition. If it gets knocked over and someone else has to run 13 miles with wet socks, well that would be very very bad. If you must wash your feet, bring a wet hand towel or something, but please folks don't be throwing out buckets of water in the transition area!

Anyone have an opinion on using a 5 gallon bucket to sit on in transition? I've never used one before but am about to do my first HIM and have to admit it seems like a pretty good idea-much easier than struggling on the ground with wetsuit, shoes, etc. I've seen them used in some OLY races but didn't know if it was frowned upon for larger races with far more competitors.
