Double runs - IM training

I've read that if a run is done within 12 hours it has the same physiological effect. I've done a lot of breaking runs up, and it seems to work well. I would still recommend getting in 1 long continuos run a week in though, mainly for the mental aspect of being on the road that long!

I can't find an article supporting it, but I think it is commonly accepted that AM+PM runs more-or-less equal one long run. I think the biggest benefit would be psychological and time saving as you noted. Also, two-a-days are the way pro marathoners get in 100 miles a week, so if they do it . . .

Has anybody read anything of authority or know anything from experience about the benefits of double runs - 2 x runs in a day, instead of one long run? For me, being time poor (like everyone!) it is very handy to run to the office and back instead of spending 2.5 hours in one hit...plus I get more sleep! But I wonder if I am missing out on some adaptations from the normal long run...
