Stupid IM training questions

A friend just asked me "why don't you do your long stuff during the week, and have the weekends to hang out with your husband"? Since I don't work or have kids I certainly could, but this had not occured to me(duh) and since we had been training together for our marathon and I am not into the really LONG stuff yet it has not been an issue. My current traininig schedule calls for a long ride on Saturday and a long run Sunday (Mondays off). So I have 2 questions:

1. Is there any reason I can't just shift everything and do my long ride on say Thursday and the run on Friday and then rest day on Saturday?
2. Could I jugle the work outs through the week as long as I don't have back to back "hard run" days for example and as long as the key workouts are there? I have heard some advocates of the back to back long ride/runs and some that say no. I have always done them back to back on the weekends, but am open to other ideas.

It kinda seems it would throw me off a bit since race day is Sunday , or maybe not.

What does everyone else do?

i say go for it
you're going to taper rolling into race week anyway

I have several friends, one a Multiple IM finisher and another Just training for her first IM who handle it this way...their weekends were full but they had plenty of time on the week days to get in the long stuff...Now that better weather is arriving along with longer days, I'll be getting in a second long ride mid-week.
Work the schedule...do't let the schedule work you.

Once school lets out I do my weekend workouts on Wednesday and Thursday. It leaves the weekends free for family time and recovery workouts. The back to back long ride/hour run day followed by the long run/hour ride day worked well for me.

I have to do my long stuff during the week when the kids are in school b/c I have to do b-day party duty and other family stuff on the weekend when hubby and kids are around.

I have done the same. If you need to adjust to the day of the week, do it for a couple of months immediately prior, but I'm with Anton, make the schedule fit you!

Thanks for the feedback! I think I am going to see if I can make it work with my long stuff being Thurs/Fri and rest Sat . That will work well since my massage girl is in on Saturdays and not Mondays. I like to take my "off day" for that. I can spend more time with hubby when he is home on the weekends.

OMG if i didnt have to work my long stuff would def. be done during the week!!Especially cycling since schools are in session people are @ work the traffic is slow! So jealous of yu girl! I owe I owe so off to work i go until i die!!!:(

If I didn't work M-F 8-5 I'd be out on random Tuesday afternoons will less traffic and I'd further separate my long ride (Tuesday) my long run (Thursday).

When I trained for IM, I did my long runs on Thursday afternoon/evenings - I'd leave work around 3 to start running by 3:30 at the latest. I'd do my long rides one day of the weekend so the other day I'd have to relax or do whatever else needed to be done. That worked best for me so I didn't have back to back long days. If I knew I'd be missing a long ride on the weekend, I was also able to ride into work (19.2 miles), ride at lunch (15-20 miles) and ride home (19.2 miles) so that at least gave me, at minimum 55 miles on a weekday. I don't have that luxury anymore (I now work 6 miles from home and can't get out for rides at lunch) but it worked well for IM training! Good luck

I love to do that on a regular basis but I am normally working M-F.

I work 10-7 so I have done longer workouts during the week, or on holidays.

What ever works for you.

See, even IM vets like britt can second guess their feelings / wisdom about training.

Britt, You know your body best.
and now that you have a few races under your belt, er, somewhere, you have experience.

Your intuition is right on, like Beads said above, if it works for you, that's all that matters.

In bodybuilding / weight training days gone by, my w.o. partner and I used to be on a 3-day routine,
legs/back/chest. and since there are 7 days in a week it meant that each week we did legs on a different day than the previous week. Our muscles don't have a calendar (other things being equal).

The taper lets you adjust to race day being a Sunday, so, no conflict.

Many published Triathlon training schedules are organized on a Day 1, Day 2, etc. format. So without having asked Mark or Paula this question directly (I can't imagine actually posing this one, it's so obvious) I think that means it doesn't mnatter whether Day 4 is a Thursday or a Sunday in any given week. For example, Rest day follows a long run wherever that happens to fall on the calendar.

If you wanted to do a six-day rotation and have Long Day be different each week, so be it.

Co-ordinating a w/o with some one else might be a challenege, but if it was easy they'd call it football, right?

PoC

My husband and I have a deal: I can do endurance sports if I am home with him one weekend day. DEAL! I do a long ride or run on Sat or Sun, then follow up with the opposite on Monday morning. Works for me and it keeps us both happy :)

I use "Start to Finish Ironman Training" for that reason: it offers 2-3 workouts a day, but highlights key workouts. I can mix and match according to my schedule. It's worked twice...and hopefully again this summer!

And btw: there are no stupid questions...even vets have something to learn!
