Half before Full Ironman---always or not?
um I never did one before my first full. I think that is for Kona if you are doing the lottery (and you of course would have for the race if you qualified).
I never did one, and don't think it mattered much. Hubby did one just because his first IMC would have been his first tri period if he had not done one--2 months out.
Heck no! I've run into tons of people whose first IM was their first and only triathlon.
It' s not a pre-rec. I've even met a few where Ironman was their first race...ever. It's just not one of those things where you have to have years of experience to be able to complete one.
The "World Championships" in Kona is the only race that requires an HIM or IM qualification or a completion if you get in by lottery.

Not a requirement at all in my opinion.
Not required at all. TRAINING is the thing that IS required. Just make sure you can handle the distance in training before the race so you can enjoy the day.
Not required. But I still think it's a very good idea to do one. Even if it is not the same as a full, the half is where you start to get a sense of what in-race nutrition is all about.
I've always done a half 3-4 weeks out of a full (2x). It's a great way to peak. Though I wouldn't say any 1/2 is necessary, you'll learn quite a bit about your nutritional requirements, pacing, how to pee on the bike, etc. The only downside with doing a 1/2 is that when you get to the finish line you'll think, "Fawk! How the hell could I ever do 2x this distance!"
Greatness is only achieved by those who perpetually raise the expectations of themselves to the point where it ruins their life.
Holy shit... i just started training for an IM an never thought of the bath room issue. Where's that thread...
1st season HIM, 2nd season IM. That is how I did it and I am glad I did. I learned a ton during the HIM, but not enough to totally prepare me for the IM experience. IMO the only thing that comes close to replicating the experience are "iron weekends". Sat.-6-7 hour ride followed by a 1 hour run. Sun.- 3 hour run followed by an hour bike. Later in the day a 30 minute swim. Get in a couple of these if your training plan calls for them and you will be as ready as can be.

No, only Kona for the lottery and of course if you qualify.
Ironman Louisville 2007 was my second triathlon ever, and my first was a sprint. It can be done...I finished in just under 13.5 hours, so not exactly record time, but I did finish. I echo what was said above...train, train, train. And the train a little more. Race experience might have come in handy for my Ironman, but during the race, I was really wishing I spent more time preparing for it.

I know M-dot has that requirement but from a training and performance standpoint, , is the experience of the 1/2 always a prerequisite for attempting the full IM.
