I have been envious of a few riding buddies that have the Garmin 205/305,, and have considering buying one. My questions are; can these units be used for pack packing/ route finding/hiking in the mountains? If so how good are they at that task compared to GPS map 60, OR alternatively can the GPS 60 be used as a cycle computer?

My goal is to not have to spend $$ for a fancy bike computer that can only be used for a bike computer. I really dont need the heart rate info as much as the ability to find my way. Any Suggetions ideas feedback would be great

The 205/305? Not a chance. The "map" it spits out is a meaningless line drawing with zero topo features. The 205/305 aren't comparable to the Oregon/Colorado series. In my cycling/running/hiking experience, the run GPSs simply don't have the funtionality to use backcountry. But it's not their purpose: Size and weight take precedence over mapping. The cycling ones, however, like Garmin's Edge series, seem like they could be used on a trail, but too big to run.

Raygir ... 205, 305 apply to both Forerunner and Edge. Which are you talking about? I agree with TriSooner that the Forerunner has no chance. Not sure about the Edge.

I've used my Garmin to find my way out of the mountains. I admit it's not ideal, but the problem with bigger units is that I'd never ever take them with me on a mtn bike or a trail run. End result: better than a compass, not as good as a full on GPS unit.

Greatness is only achieved by those who perpetually raise the expectations of themselves to the point where it ruins their life.

what model do you have?, and did you use it just as a compass or did you download a route to it first?
I really appreciate the feedback thanks
