my BIG toenail is all black and blue and throbbing in pain. long story.
i have iced it a little bit.
should I just leave it alone & deal with it & wait til the nail falls off or will the pain not go away until the pressure is relieved by having a doctor drill a small hole in nail to release blood buildup underneath??

It is really based on the severity of the pain. If you can deal with it, leave it be. The pain will eventually go away, you probably need to give it at least good 3 days. Also don't try to pry the nail off, let it come off by itself. You have at least good 6 months before the new one grows.

I have dropped stuff on my foot and had that problem.
I sterilized a heavy needle or a paperclip, then I heated it up with a candle flame, and I poked a hole in the center of the black toenail and blood came out and relieved the pressure. It felt so much better and I didn't lose the nail.
I had to reheat an poke a few spots to get ost of the blood out.
Afterwards I cleaned it thoroughly and let it dry and put a band-aid over it.
It drained a little bit overnight.

Good luck.

...there are actually videos of people ripping their toenails off on youtube....I will not become one of those....however, the event that lead to this injury would have been quite the video to post for all of your viewing pleasure...

I'll wait a few days, see how it feels...would be nice to save the nail I suppose, so if need be, I'll get out the old drill after a few martinis.........or just use a needle

"The martini is a cocktail made with gin and vermouth." A "vodka" martini is no closer to a martini than California sparkling wine is to Champagne. :) Yummy, love that pine tar!

A doctor might give you more piece of mind, but I'm sure you can find someone that has experience doing it without the cost, inconvenience, and bad magazines in the waiting room of a doctor. My local running store will take care of it, but I don't think it's a service of every Foot Locker at the mall.

C'mon suck it up and poke it with a hot needle and you'll be feeling better in a few minutes. ;-)

as a physician (internal med/peds) i can say that you don't really need a dr for this. if it is really bothering you, do as others have suggested, and just heat up a paperclip and gently push it through the nail. as others have also said, do not remove the nail. it will come off by itself.

hope that helps.

Bloody hell...I had the Dremel out and ready to go! The little cutting wheel works really well cutting across the nail!
I never thought of pouring vodka over the nail before! the would both sterilize and soften...

I think the vodka was meant for General anaesthesia?
What happens if the Dremel sparks over your toe covered with vodka?

Power tools are for wimps. I was going to suggest a hammer and a small nail...

Then the vodka is critical!

Help! My toe nail is bright blue! I dropped a couch on it last night...

It hurt all day like it was going to explode. Now 24 hours later the pain has increased with the swelling. One website said this was time to see a doctor.

I just read this page and decided to sign up.

I have a picture of it. It's quite a beautiful blue. I just need a way to
Upload it with my iPhone.

You seriously mean using a drill?

Ok, I drink Vodka Martinis (Gray Goose to be exact), just a touch of vermouth shaken, with garlic and jalipino stuffed (courtesy of Costco) olives. BEST DRINK EVER.

p.s.
Heat a paperclip with a blow tourch and burn a hole in the toe to relieve the pressure---what we did for the soccer and football players in the training room

I strongly recommend the needle approach to relieve the pain. Just make sure you properly disinfect the area, and all the instruments you plan to use. When you're finished, pour some rubbing alcohol over the nail, and place some bacitraycin over the hole(s), and place a waterproof band-aid over it. The loss of your nail is a small price to pay to continue working out and avoid infection.

I'm in the hospital on my phone. The doctor should be coming in here and puncturing it for me. It's been more than 2 days. My toe is swollen and skin is blue around the nail.

I need some pain killers!

So everything about putting holes in the nail is true. It still hurts but now advil is taking care of most the pain where as before I couldn't sleep and trembled in pain when my toe tapped anything.

The doctor came in with a cautery and burned 3 holes into my left big toe nail. Then I could feel the pressure releasing through the holes while enjoying the smell of smoking toe nail.I feel good about going to a doctor just because I don't have the same sanitation products. Oh and I got some pictures that are really gross. I look forward to grossing somebody out.

I'm supposed to leave it alone so it will stay on while a new nail grows over 6 months. but I want to start swimming by June its just going to fall off immediately. :/

Glad it worked out (pun intended) I had a Doctor do it once, but that was really just to learn how to do it. Now I do it myself...and you can too!
