I need some advice. I'm running a Half marathon on May 1st and then another on May 22nd (three weeks apart with 2 weekends in between). I've never done something like this before. I plan on running 10 miles the weekend after the first race and then 8 miles the weekend before the second race. This seems like an okay idea to me, but like I said, I've never done something like this before, so I'm not sure if it is a good idea. I have multiple 3 mi and 5 mi runs scheduled during the weeks, along with some bike rides and a full rest day after the first Half.

If you have any advice or think this is either insane or sounds okay I'd love to hear your suggestions and comments.

Thanks,

Toni

I ran two of them last November and actually decreased my time by about 7 minutes on the second race. I think you should be fine as long as your base is pretty high. I was running around 14 to 15 miles on my long runs for the two months prior to the races.

Even if you don't have the energy to be competitive in the second use it as a tempo run and enjoy the race atmosphere.

Just my opinion and I am very OCD.

Would agree with D. I ran 3 1/2's last spring each 3 weeks apart. 2nd 1/2 was a PR. 3rd was a trail 1/2 so tough to judge time. Would suggest include an extra rest day between the two. If you have good base in the rest won't be a problem and may actually help.

Good Luck

Thanks for the advice everyone! I've often heard that when people do two IM's in a row, they are often faster in the second race. So I have something to look forward to. :) The massage and the rest day are great ideas! I'll let you know how it goes. :)

I think you should consider 1) what’s your goal for each race? 2) how’s your training before race day? 3) you must love too much running to enroll in two races the same month, so the question of why? is answered 4) normally training for a marathon you do longs runs 14 miles and 16 miles about the same time apart your are doing, so it is definitely doable. 5) understanding that these are your first half races, either one with the best time will be your PR! 6) double the experience, double enjoyment and double the feeling of triumph.
If I’m in your asics I would do it.

Thanks Panhcotri. 1) Finish w/o pain. ;) 2) sufficient 3) sort of. More of a trying to overcome the distance with proper preparation 4) 14 mi will be my longest before the first half 5) these are probably my 10th and 11th halfs. I signed up for Vancouver first. Then saw when Peach City was. I've done Peach City before and it was a lot of fun. The people are nice and the area is beautiful and I've been meaning to get back there for a few years now for the race. Figured I might as well since I had the training in. 6) exactly! asics won't be there that day. the saucony's will have to do. ;) I think all should be okay. I guess I was just worried about overuse injury. Thanks for the input.
