Season start, weight gain, weight loss, advice?
Don't know what your nutrition looks like but as we all know it starts and ends with a solid diet plan with little or no processed foods. Sounds like you are putting in the work, so just clamp down the diet. Also I drink at least 1 1/2 gal of H2O a day and it seems to keep my system flushed and weight stable .
No real exercise at all for at least 2 months . . . I have finally given up my smoking habits . . . I've put on about 15 pounds in this time off.
Too long. . . Great! . . . Duh! Taking that much time off, stopping smoking (and then over-eating), lead to the 15 pounds. You knew better than that :)
Stop eating 3 times a day, and start eating 5 times a day, with smaller portions. Works for me.
Congrats on quitting smoking. It's not easy
I've never heard of anyone not gaining weight after stopping smoking. You have to focus on what is important, even if you must eat more. When I quit smoking 7 years ago, I gained almost 30 pounds in three months.
It took me two full years of dieting and training (mostly swimming at that time) to lose 40 pounds. I lost an additional 10 pounds to get to my current weight when I started training for tris. During the season, I usually lose an additional 7-8 pounds which I gain back during off-season.
Check out how your training for the National Marathon lets you lose weight while eating normally. If it simply happens just wait long enough. If it does not happen, which is very possible, because your body's metabolism changes when you do not smoke anymore, you will have to plan some kind of dieting. You must eat about 500 calories less than you burn every day. With this, you will lose about a pound per week.
Be careful if you feel weak or tired and stop dieting at least two weeks before your race.
Do you do any interval work? I think the best way to lose weight is to go hard and fast. I see all kinds of overweight people at the gym who work just hard enough to break a sweat before cooldown. That's enough evidence for me. And let's face it, kickin' your own !%& is sometimes as much fun as kickin' some else's!
Hey did that race last year and it was cold! But i did PR 3:22! As far as losing weight your a man it will be easy!lol Just go by a good diet of whole foods lean meats, lots of veggies steamed, sweet potatoes, and for dessert stick w/ homemade baked goodies not store bought. I have a marathon
in myrtle beach feb 14th my coach has me doing speedwork during my long run which really burns the calories!Good luck to you!:)
Nutrition - eat real foods. Minimize or eliminate processed foods with ingredients you can't pronounce or recognize. lots of vegetables and whole grains with lean proteins. Fish, chicken, some pork. Lay off the alcohol, too, if you are a drinker. I drink beer in the off season and gain a few pounds. I minimize it in the season and stay nice and lean.
If you run 30 miles a week and eat right, you should drop the weight over the course of a season or two.
Always tri - B.A.M.F.
No advice, but a big congratulations on quitting smoking. That's the best thing you can do for yourself even with the weight gain, and it's definitely not easy! Best of luck on your marathon training.

Fruits, vegetables, lean meat.
Along with running and eating properly, hit the trainer and double up on days you feel frisky: runs 1st, trainer time later in the day. The double workout will give you a metabolism boost twice during the day burning more calories, even at rest. Work up to it slowly to 40-50mins on the trainer on double days or find what works best for you.
Congrats on quitting smoking!
Congrats on quitting. That is what got me into this mess in the first place, my addictive personality and a desire to quit smoking and replace it with something else. Eating an absurd amount of fruit and veggies along with copious quantities of water have made the difference for me. I usually eat 6- 8 pieces of fruit, a good sized salad with dinner, and water all day. That said, in just a little cut back due to having my wisdom teeth removed, I have already gained four pounds. So, I suppose some speed work and a couple of doubles might be in order.

i find you charming already!
Thanks for the advice guys. I am glad to see that your suggestions have so far been my plan from the start. I live very close to a farmer's market so I've been cooking most of my own food from scratch each day. I work out twice a day, once during my lunch break and then again on my way home after work.
After two and half weeks of being back on the bandwagon, so to speak, I've dropped about 5 pounds and I feel great. Is anyone here planning on the Nation Marathon this year?

J, just noticed where you are located. Ever done the Oddman duathlon in March?
That which does not kill me makes me faster...
I have not ever done the Oddman du. Is it a good race? I am just starting to gear back up after a month or so of pretty light training, and might be interested in a March race. I just signed up for the Philly Insurance Olympic Tri in June, so March might be a good time to see what is what as far as the bike and run go. Would you recommend it?

This will be my first year doing it. I am still waiting to sign up. The race organizer says he is running late this year so it is not up on Active yet. I have heard from some friends that it is a hard, muddy off-road race, which sounds like fun to me. 5k run followed by 10 miles on your MTB, all off road. Feels like a fun way to kick off the season. I am also doing the Oly in Phila in June and I am looking at the Pine Barrens long distance tri in Sept. Not sure about that one yet.

Hey guys. So my deal with myself was after running two marathons in one week last fall I'd take a full break. No real exercise at all for at least 2 months.
First the good - in this time I have finally given up my smoking habits. (pats self on the back)
The Bad - I've put on about 15 pounds in this time off.
To get myself back on track I've signed up for the National Marathon in late March and have begun my base training about 2 weeks ago. I'd say I'm doing about 30-40 miles a week in addition to 30-40 minutes of weight training six days a week. The improvement has been stark, I look great, feel great and definately sense that I'm training better/harder than ever before. (an improvement I attribute in no small sense to the lack of tar in my lungs).
But as usual I respect your opinions very highly - does anyone have any advice for ways to futher drop my new found spare tire and continue this upwards trend? I'd really like to start the year off by taking 3-5 minutes from my marathon time.
