I hate the cold, i hate the cold, i hate the cold. this is just stupid. it was 50 out yesterday. i rode my bike OUTSIDE. it was amazing. today it's 15. 15 feels like negative 20 after being out in 50. this is just stupid. i want to be warm. i'm not asking for much. if i could just wear 1 long sleeve shirt instead of layers i'd be happy. if i could not have my face freeze or come back home with frozen sweat in my hair i'd be happy. i can't wear sunglasses and a facemask because it makes my sunglasses fog up. so i am forced to choose between having my eyes water like crazy, which makes it so i can't see, or have my chin and mouth be so cold that i can't feel when I have snot running like niagra falls out of my oversized (jewish) nose.

did you know that near the equator it never gets this cold. thats right, there are parts of the world, hell, there are parts of the USA where it never gets this cold. and i chose to go to school in an icebox 4 months out of the year. ITS SUNNY OUTSIDE, WHY ISN'T IT WARM!!!!!!!! don't even get me started on the wind. it hates me too. and worse than all this, we just elected a president who is vowing to stop climate change. WHY? who likes the cold so much that we want to stop global warming? so here is what i'm going to do. i'm going to walmart and buying all the styrofoam they have and i'm going to have a HUGE bonfire. and hopefully tomorrow the new ozone hole above my house will let some warm air in.

yer funny....North Florida has been damn cold these past few weeks too. I don't mind 50's but riding in 20's and low 30's doesn't do it for me either. Thankfully I have an elliptical machine.

Just keep spinning....spinning, spinning....uh, do I know you?

+1. I accept that living in the north requires a season change. But this is getting a bit ridiculous. We're going on four weeks of this and its begining to get to me. My usual 2hr long run (the highlight of my training week) really stunk this morning. The one day above 30 in the last three weeks melted enough snow to make my favorite trail an ice skating rink overnight now that its 20 again. I really miss El Nino.

I'm sure this thread is going to elicit more wining than the combined noise of all of our indoor trainers whirling along in unison...Southerns beware!

i feel your pain chekmarks...i live in jersey and the weather isnt nearly as bad as some more northern states but the cold is simply irritating. If i wasnt 17 i'd be living in florida or some other warm place. That's why im going to University of Florida!!! (and obviously some other reasons)

Embrace the cold. Love the snow. Go skiing! If you're in Chicago, that will mean a long drive to some XC skiing I suppose.

I can relate. I went to college in Chicago, which drove me to choose a grad school in Florida. Roughly a year ago I was training for a marathon up there. I remember my camelbak freezing during a long run, forcing me to eat snow to keep hydrated. I think that was the straw the broke this camel's back. One day, to keep things interesting, I fueled up with makeshift sno-cones by squeezing my gels onto handfulls of snow. It was pretty delicious.

The cold makes us stronger.
It makes us mentally tougher.
It feels fresh.
It allows precipitation to be in the form of snow, which is pretty.
It makes us appreciate the 50 degree days.
It makes us celebrate the days in the 70's.
It....it....all right it sucks. Especially when the #$#@%& wind starts howling, which is like every #%&@#%^ day. Even my dog is starting to get depressed.

I think you mean downhill skiing. The XC skiing is excellent here in the Chicago area. The downhill skiing, however, is not. For those of you in the Rockies, we ski on converted landfills here and like it. Go Wilmot!

It was a brisk 78 here in Daytona.

Which is actually warmer than it has been the past few days.
It was in the high 20"s the other night. Hasn't been that cold here since 2002.

Back in the 80's by Mon and I can put on shorts.

I hope to never live anywhere that will require socks, much less gloves, for the rest of my days.

Next time it's really cold during a workout, just think of me on the beach running barefoot. This should warm you up a few degrees, if only out of anger......

Relax guys, you know what to expect. If you've lived in the Northeast all your life like me it's just part of the game. God forbid you should suffer through 4 weeks of cold weather, get ready for another 6 or 8. I bet some of our more Northern friends read through this and just laughed (or cursed) because they've got it a lot worse than some us. It was nice the other day in the 40s but it just reminds us what it'll be like when spring/summer rolls around again and we can all look forward to it. Don''t bitch, you're better than that.

I went out today on the bike it was 20. The only thing I dislike about the cold is putting on all those clothes. Oh I dislike all the shortened daylight, too. But cold is good, gives us incentive to base train correctly.

I grew up in Minnesota and learned to enjoy winter. Now I live in Ohio and winter here sucks. 35 and rain most of the time.

The great thing about training indoors is that I get to catch up on lots of movies! I put a movie on while I'm riding my bike or on the treadmill. I can go through three or four per week. Awesome. Once the summer comes around I'll wonder why I have that Blockbuster membership.

Here's more good stuff - no road debris or dogs chasing you. If you get a flat and forgot a spare, you don't have to hike 15 miles home. Starting to bonk - just run to the kitchen and get some more food (or shout for the support staff/wife and kids to bring you something).

I must say that as a native floridian now living in N.C. and having just posted a thread on here practically complaining about the cold about a month ago. I must say I thoroughly enjoyed running in our first snow of the year last week. Although it was bitterly cold, I must say the air seemed fresh and the run felt great just from the energy I got from running in the snow. Since then been running in the 50's. Not a bad week!

I heard that chekmarks. I grew up in NM. I live in MN. Over the years, I started to mind the cold less and less. I thought I was getting used to it. Then I started doing tris and lost 30 lbs. of insulation. I don't go outside much.

When I woke up Thursday before last, it was -22. As I write this, it's -4. We've had snow on the ground since mid-November, and it's nearly impossible to run outside without a significant chance of falling on the ice. Forget about a bike ride. Your body practically forces you to carry an extra 10 lbs. For some of us, the day we get to finally go outside to train is the biggest holiday of the year.

lol - I wish it were in the 20's yesterday for my long run day. It was 3 (-7 wind chill) when we started on our run, 81% humidity (which is really unusual here) and luckily only a slight breeze out of the Southeast. We headed south first and I didn't think the wind was too bad until I noticed that the front of my legs felt like two frozen chunks of ice. Gregg's glasses froze over about 15' in to the run so I carried them in my pocket for him and made him run on the inside so he didn't fall off the curb and sprain an ankle or something! Found a couple neighborhoods to wander around in that kept the wind off of us and then turned around to head north back. My quads warmed up, but then my butt was froze! And you couldn't blink too long because you're eyelashes would freeze together from all the frost on them! Great time! We got our hour and ahalf in and then headed to coffee with the rest of the running club. Took me about fifteen minutes in a HOT shower to warm up afterwards. I'm glad we switched our long run from Sunday to Saturday this week though because this morning it's -3 with a windchill of -12! Frosty! Crazy Wyoming weather - just last Tuesday we ran in shorts and t-shirts and it was 60! Well, what doesn't kill you only makes you stronger right? This is good training for us - last year at Ironman Coeur d'Alene it snowed three days before race day so if it does that to us this year we'll be well prepared! Today we spin - INSIDE. Have a great Sunday

I go for a run in the state park next door and because the leaves are down I grab glances of all kinds of wildlife...
This morning I was out for a run in the park and when the sun hit the ice covered lake the sounds it made were awesome! All this groaning and grinding and pops and whistles...sounded like whales in heat!
Very cool...
20 degrees and sunny for the run...

Sounds great. I have quite a few trails in the park within 4 miles of my house. Unfortunately, the trails have been unrunnable for weeks. They are a sheet of ice. The last week of November, before the snow came, I noticed some birds by an old stone storage shed in woods near a creek. There ended up being 4 Downey Woodpeckers, 2 red-headed woodpeckers, cardinals, a bluejay, and what appeared to be a Scarlet Tanager (I couldn't 100% confirm without binoculars). I wish I had a camera. They were all relatively calm and staying still. I went back to the spot last week (walked) and didn't see one bird.

Went to the pool yesterday morning at 7am for a masters swim in Corner Brook, NL, at -26. That to me is the worst thing...running I can dress for, trainer means rewatching great old movies and being warm, but getting my ass out to the car on a freezing cold evening/morning to get into a chilly pool, sucks...
My "long run" today was on snowshoes in whiteouts with a rather chilly doberman in a neoprene dog coat and muttluks. Her whole face was white except for little black spots for eyes...now she's happily laying in front of the fireplace!

I have to put in my .02 here. I ran in a half marathon yesterday in Minnesota, Downtown St.Paul (ok it was shortened to 6.4 miles due to weather) at -7F with a windchill of -25. I got warm and had to strip the balaclava b/c i was overheating with all my layers. Today, i took the husky for a little jaunt around the river through some trails and such. Its so beautiful when its cold and bright outside. You cant change the weather, but you can change your attitude. FYI, when it hits 30 here in winter, we wear t shirts out running :)

Since I'm no longer a student and am not in the teaching profession, that formula would be more like:
Cold = Snow
Snow = Days off of school for wife and more difficult commute to work
Cold = Taunting phone calls from my wife, who's enjoying her day off while I worry about whether I may get trapped at work by the increasingly poor road conditions
Cold is..... evil

Nailed it. But I'll one up:
Snow = School day canceled = Pool is closed = Missed swim workouts = Slower swim slit; therefore:
Cold = evil

Below is a picture of me hacking the glacier off the roof of the house yesterday. The snow has formed a glacier and is crushing the trellis. The 4 foot long icicles are threatening to break the windows. It was -18C (0 degrees fahrenheit) yesterday, but the sun was shining.

Improvise, adapt and overcome.

I go to the Y and run on the treadmill for my runs during the week and then just bundle up for my long runs on the weekend.

Same with the bike. I get on the trainer or take a spin class for a few months.

today I wanted to go swim. to do this i need to drive my car. now, usually this would not be a problem, but because I live in a place (middle of indiana) where it only snows a few times a year no one cares that i have to go swim. IT TOOK ME 20 MINUTES TO GET MY CAR OUT OF MY COMPLEX'S PARKING LOT BECAUSE IF 40 FOOT LONG, 3 % GRADE INCLINE. re-dic-u-lous. but i did it. i smelled the rubber of my tires burning, and i pressed on. i did not let mother nature mess with my training. the bottom line is:

if i want to bitch, i'll bitch. because i don't just sit around and complain, i earn the right to complain.

Well, when you live in the midwest or other more central parts of the US, where the climate is pretty temperate...the snow and cold isn't nearly as fun. For one, when the road conditions get anything less than ideal, half the city shuts down in a panic, and many of those who venture out just make it more dangerous on the roads for others. And along with that, there really aren't a lot of great venues for outdoor snow activities like skiing. So, from here in Ohio, I feel comfortable saying I don't like the snow...I don't use it as an excuse to hold me back, but I'm certainly not a fan. My dislike has been rejuvinated by the ice storm we've been having the last 2 days.

I'm by Chicago, but no worries, there are some ok slopes up north and it's not too far. Drive to Racine HIM was a bit further but worth it.

I actually don't mind running in cold, i just don't like running next to cars in the dirt, since no one cleans the walkways in north west suburbs of Chicago.

Cold sucks, by itself, but once you add any kind of wind or precipitation to it things degenerate quickly. The roads get chewed up, the drivers suddenly forget how to drive, nobody shovels or salts/sands their walks, my workout becomes shoveling, and I'm temped to bring an ice chipper with me trying to walk to the gym safely.

I'd run in the cold, but it's never just cold.

Boy, Anton, that's a serious dose of perspective. I think I feel a little more grateful for, well...everything right now.

Cold ....you want cold, read "A Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich."

along those same lines, I read the book "With the Old Guard", its a bone chilling account of fighting in the Pacific during WWII. The author tells a story about how a shard of metal kills a fellow Marine who was to be a heart surgeon. It's a very eye opening story. I wrote the Marines name on a notecard and placed it in my flat tire kit. i'll never complain about something puncturing my tire again.

I am so glad I live in Houston today. I can deal with 100s in July (don't quote me, I know this will haunt me) but under 30 and I hibernate
