Budget Bike For a Friend

I have a friend who is looking to spend $600-700 on a bike that will mostly be a commuter. She would also like to use it to stay in shape (I'll talk her into a tri some day). I was floored by the fact that I can't seem to find ANYTHING in that price range with drop bars by any company. Am I taking crazy pills or has my style of bike become that cool? Oh, I also refuse to let her ride Sora components, bad experiences on tours with them. Any suggestions? I've looked at Kona, Giant, for the most part because they tend to be cheap.

If you don't need support of a brand name, you can always go with www.bikesdirect.com. Can get tiagra/105 for around your price range.

agree with xc, I know a few people who have bought from bikesdirect.com and been very pleased.

if it's a commuter, how about single speed?...you'll find more in the right price range

if it's commuter...does that mean that your friend wants it with dropbars or with flat bars? The trek 7.5fx is a pretty good flat bar bike if your looking to commute/get a workout every once in a while.

Sorry but I disagree. 2 thumbs down on bikesdirect.com.

I thought specialized had some good beginner bikes that were below that range, but I'm not sure what the components were - and I have to say I don't know what the one step up bikes were.

I am pretty certain that both trek and specialized have some good bikes in the price range of 7-8 hundred dollar. they are going to have lower end components but they are still good components just not the lightest or smoothest. I would suggest taking a look at them and see what you may find.
