Budget road bike conversion

Recently I've started thinking more seriously about the bike portion of my triathlons. I have a specialized Tarmac Comp full Ultegra with Ksyrium elite wheels and was looking to upgrade to something more TT oriented. Not willing to give up my road bike (which I love more than my future children) I considered buying a used TT rig. I'm a little on the tall side so I've had very few options in the used bikes department and while another new bike is always an option, 2K is a lot to drop on a entry level bike.

I decided to add clip-on aero bars to my Tarmac and call it a day. They didn't fit my wing style bars so I decided to get new bars also. A nice pair of carbon bars was going to cost at least $100 so why not spend a little more and get a TT base bar and new brakes and shifters. Toss in a wheel cover from wheelbuilder.com and a craigslist rev x for $50 and it kind of looks like a TT bike.

Anyhow, here is what I ended up with.

I still need a tire for the front wheel, I wasn't planning on riding just the rim and I will add some bar tape when I get a chance. Other than those items, I'd be glad to hear your thoughts.

Total conversion cost me about $450.00

ha ha.

I'm considering something very similar. I'm actually going to a lbs this weekend to get fitted on my bike (tarmac as well) with some new aero bars. I'll post when done.

Wait until you see my TT skin suit (made from 100% kidnap victim skin).

Actually my trainer is in the basement so the rest of the bike stuff ends up there after time also.

Maybe you should think about a foward seatpost. I like mine, it is the carbon one from profile. You get a closer to tt position in those. Plus a seat too. It helps in those areas.

Just my opinion.

+1, that's what I did just recently, largely on the advice of other trifuelers.

I posted a thing about it here, you can see the resulting bike. It's a Trek 1200.

The nice thing is that I can swap back the old seat post, take off the aerobars, and I'm back to a road bike with the same fit I always had.
