Recent development in my swim...My feet cramp up when i go for longer than 300 yards. Right in the arch when my feet are pointed and kicking, I have a muscle that seems to contract and i cant do anything but stop, and stretch it out.
Any ideas? shoot more questions if you feel you need more info to help me out.
Thanks in advance!

I have had this in the past. I had slight cramping in my arches on the bike and while running but the muscles would spasim really bad when swimming. I after much research I attribute it to overall tightness in my calf muscles. I've worked in a lower body stretching program that has seemed to aliveiate the problem and I've had no instances of it in the last several months.

Most of the time once a cramp comes into the foot it has to do with something not right in the muscle function higher up in the leg. Do a full stretch of the calves, achillies, hammys, glutes, stretch that foot too, just to get everything loosened up before you go. I get cramps in my calves about 20 meters into the first lap if I dont do a little stretch before I take off. Good luck to yah!

i used to have this when i came back to swimming after having a long time off...time in the pool helped me...i just kept slowly increasing the volume until it ceased to be a problem. i'm not sure if i was all tense or that it was a physical problem of tightness, but it went away eventually.
stretch well and regularly
i don't think stretching prior to swimming is going to do much for you unless you're already warmed up. the daily stretching effort over time has more of an effect IMHO

I've had foot cramps in the pool, usually at the end of my wkout, if I didn't drink. Once I started drinking thoughout my wkouts, the cramps subsided

+1
I get it in my calves/hams also when I try to run before I swim, or if I've been skiing and try to swim, or if I bike and...

Relax your ankle some and let your foot "flutter" a bit. This might slow you down? I'm not fast so I don't worry about it, but don't work so hard at pointing the toes. Keep in mind I have no formal swim training, but might be worth a try.

Also, roll a golf ball under your foot to massage the muscles in the bottom of your foot.
I also have this problem
I also have this problem from time to time, I'll stop stretch it out and message it. I agree with Jtrimom that this problem can often accur because of minor dehydration, I also seem to get this problem if my nutrition has not been so good. Hope this helps :-)
