cleats.

As all you guys probably know by now, I play ultimate just about every weekend, and any other chance I get. I wear cleats of various kind(i've worn soccer, football, and baseball, my new pair is baseball cleats, and i think that's my fav cleats for ulti) i'm wondering if I should get any insoles or anything like that for them? i don't know alot about shoes and how they differ, so any advice would be helpful. i also haven't been fitted at the local running shop yet, and will probably do that soon.

I would think they are fine as you've always used them unless for some reason they now hurt, or your feet are getting sore more often. Don't fix what isn't broken :)

May not NEED insoles, but probably wouldn't hurt. If you play for a long time it might be good to get the insoles or orthotics if you use them. My reasoning is that you will spend a lot more time running and pounding the ground in them than you would for baseball or whatever, where its primarily short sprints. I think adding the insole might give you more cushioning and comfort in the long run so you can stay with the game longer. Might help avoid injuries depending on your mechanics.

i play about 3-4 hours at a time, and during that 3-4 hours, i'm normally sprinting for about 85-90% of the time, if not more, either cutting on offense or chasing my guy on defense, and all the sprints are all out. they don't bother me cept for right after i play, and its my heel. I've always had this problem but it goes away shortly thereafter. Since i've started running more for races I was wondering if its something I'd need to look into correcting. plus I got new cleats so I don't know how they'll do.

i think soccer cleats would be better suited for the task, it is much more similar to ultimate frisbee than baseball is. one is constant running with short bursts of sprints, and one is basically a sedentary activity mixed with occasional running.

Plus, there are very rarely hard cuts made in baseball, so their cleats don't have substantial sidewall support. You could roll your ankles easily with them

EXACTLY! Not designed for lateral movement.

I do not believe insoles are as important as using the appropriate cleat for the conditions. Too long of a spike on dry/frozen ground and you risk rolling your ankle or slipping on your backside

Have you tried rugby cleats (boots?). They have a thick pad over the toe to prevent the inevitable spike to toe incident, plus the support is great.

4th vote for soccer cleats. In my ultimate days, I tried both FB and soccer cleats and there is no comparison in terms of shoe weight and cutting ability. If your cleat cushioning sucks, try an old running shoe insole or an off-the-shelf sports insole before going the custom route. Just make sure you can maintain the same stability with a bigger insole in the shoe--high ankle sprains are no fun.

don't think of it as fixing, but improving. riding your huffy beach cruser at Kona isn't broken, just stupid. riding a TT bike instead of the cruser is improving the situation. :) I put insoles in everything down to my down slippers that I wear winter camping around the fire.

I on the other hand see insoles as a big change - I have had several pairs that were not right for my feet, and find my feet do much better without them.

Hearing that he has had some heel issues changes it - in that case, they are worth trying. But just because everyone seems to wear them isn't a reason to me. I don't see the insoles having the same inherent performance gains as a road bike over a huffy.

well, i've got 3 pairs of cleats, i've got some UA football cleats made for WR's, don't like how they feel, and every time i made a cut i nearly rolled my ankle, so i went back to my old cleats, i've got some mizuno cleats, i don't exactly remember the type of cleats, but judging by the cleat pattern i'd say probably baseball, because they aren't knobby, but they are long plastic cleats, and the ones i just got are http://www.academy.com/index.php?page=content&target=products/footwear/m...

i've tried soccer cleats, and I just don't like how soccer cleats or football cleats feel. Call me crazy for using baseball cleats out there, but i just prefer how baseball cleats feel on my feet. and i also feel that i've had better ankle support w/ my older cleats than any other shoe i've ever worn.

ps the only other cleats that i might have gotten were the same UA cleats that i hate. these were marked down big time. they are marked @ $30, but the original was $60...
