Vocations?
What a great topic.
My formal training is as a Ceramic Engineer.
My current position is in a global corporation in a middle management manufacturing position. Formal title Manufacturing Manager. Most companies would call me a plant manager as I have manufacturing and engineering reporting to me.
I'm interested in potentially changing careers. I'm a Public Relation professional and have worked as a press secretary for the state house and in a PR agency for the last two years doing PR for mostly high tech companies. My dream is to be an entrepreneur and own a brick and mortar store. Whether its a running, biking, or tri shop, or a bar, I think they would all be fun. I also started brewing my own beer, so that could be cool - a bar / craft-brewery. Then I'd totally sponsor a Hash House Harriers group!
I am the investigations manager in my region for a state agency here in Fla. We regulate several financial industries and investigate stuff like mortgage fraud and investment fraud (yes, busy lately.....) I've been in law enforcement/investigations for 15 or so years. If I ever did change careers, I think I'd also like my own business or perhaps teaching college.
Just keep spinning....spinning, spinning....uh, do I know you?

Longhair, what is it like working in that field, and what type of degree do you have?

I work for a firm that services loans that are in, or in the process of, foreclosure. We do everything from rehab work to inspection services.
I'm currently taking leave, as my father is in the last stages of lung cancer. So, I guess I'm also a caregiver.
My true ambition is becoming a fulltime freelance writer. I've been published in a few cycling magazines, provided online content, and product reviews for products in the cycling, diving, running, and outdoor sector.
/Longhair, I assume that is your login for a reason?.....It's hard to tell from the photos.
I just donated my hair to "locks of love" out of Lake Worth, FL. I never thought I could get attached to having longer hair. I was baffled by the mirror for days after I donated.

i'm an architect working for a large company, hoping to work for myself soon.
Before having kids I was a pharmaceutical rep. Post children, I opened an interior design company. It was really successful but as the kids got older I just could not handle the stress anymore, even though I love design and had a great time. I don't regret closing it last year, but I miss it sometimes.
J.Michael, my dad is at the end right now with skin cancer/melanoma (Always wear sunscreen!!!). I just got back from a week in Florida helping my mom out. It sucks, doesn't it? Sorry to hear about your dad.
That which does not kill me makes me faster...
I'm a product engineer (basically a computer programmer) in GIS (geographic information systems, which is mapping and geographic analysis software). I'm also currently working on my Masters degree also in GIS, as I came into the field with a computer background.

Pre-kids I was a software engineer for Microsoft. Now I'm a homeschooling mom, part-time swim coach and triathlon coach, and aspiring novelist (with agent, but not yet with publisher ) and photographer.
My perfect job in the future would be travel photography with writing attached, but that's not all that easy to pull off with the kids.
Hubby is a corporate pilot and airplane mechanice. This is his dream job :-)

About as low stress a job as it gets. But also about as low wage as it gets. You win some, you lose some.
Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.
I am finishing my master's degree to be a Physician Assistant....hopefully in orthopaedic surgery/sports medicine. I started off in athletic training.
I'm hoping this is my dream job......so far there is no evidence that it isn't!
I sell medical devices, specifically back braces. Our products are split between those for people with back pain that need support and others designed for people post surgery.
If anyone ever needs a back brace: cybertechmedical.com shows our products. Go ahead and pm me and I can help you out.
Good idea for a thread! It is interesting to see the variety of professions out there.
I'm a graphic designer in a corporate marketing department. I just missed being laid-off on the last round of lay-offs. I won't be so lucky if round two happens. I guess I'll have lot of time to train and to work on my freelance career. So any one out there need a graphic designer??

Good luck with surviving future layoffs- hopefully they don't come. It is something many people will have hanging over our heads for awhile.
I used to work for a CRM software company about 5 yrs ago. I survived a few rounds of layoffs and everytime one would go by, rumors of more sprouted right back up. It can be really stressful. Eventually my turn came too. It worked out ok, but took a few stressful months to find a new job.
Car Salesman!!!! Yes Im that guy who tries to take all your money and sell you something you dont need. Ok for real, yes I am a Salesmen, I work for a great dealership in Central Illinois. Its the third dealership Ive worked for and its nice going to work at a place I know has a great ethical background. I cant say its my dream job but every day is a new adventure, you meet a lot of very 'interesting' people selling cars.
I am a Doctor...Internist, and also a Research Associate (Oncology). Starting to dream about opening in some future an specialty store for endurance sports in my home country Ecuador, long shot, but starting to shape up in my head and recently in paper.

That's no joke. I remember quite a few near wrecks and one or two near misses. This girl got all distracted and nearly missed a building. It was just fast enough to deploy the airbags but not fast enough to need them. Scared the crap out of me and the powder made me sneeze and itch for 2 days.

Can you say foreshadowing?

Forest Ranger. Which is a good mix of Law Enforcement and Wildland Firefighting. The Firefighting gets me around the country but sometimes interferes with my training schedule.
I am a partner at a mid-size law firm in Michigan. I represent municipalities across Michigan and specialize in financing public improvements for those communities. Love my job, my clients, and my colleagues.
Dream job: anchor the NBC Nightly News.
I'm in the software development industry, currently I'm a development lead overseeing a project at one of the banks in Toronto. At least I was, until they axed my entire team but me... stupid recession.

I'm a certified nurse midwife...so I see women prenatally and then deliver the babies. I work in a women's health clinic so I also do well-women care and gyn things. It's really great to develop a relationship with a mom for nine months and then be there when they have the baby. The hours are horrendous at times when you might not sleep for 36 hrs!! It can be stressful at times also. That's why I like tris!!! I had a scarey delivery on Thursday and then go in the pool....great stress reliever.

wow, what an interesting mix of crazy people :D
right now i'm a teller for a local credit union, and also looking for a 2nd PT job to get back in retail. i've worked retail and managed(at 20 yrs old was the youngest store manager in town for the company, and also led just about ever week in the major sales goals) since i was 18. i just got sick of working salaried position, so i changed careers, and am looking to go back for a lil bit! I'm also an advisor for a nutritional company called Advocare, and am very passionate about the products(notice the name). I'm gonna start going back to school when tuition reimbursement kicks in and hopefully get a degree in photography and start freelancing sports and scenery pictures. I'm also going to be going to seminary eventually and waiting for God to clear up my calling to ministry.
My dream job is owning a restaurant on the bay, in which boat can dock, bring their catch in, and have them cleaned at the restuaruant and then cooked in a hibachi style grill out on the porch, as well as having a nice inside area for regular customers.

Let us know when you open this restaurant, I'll be a customer. Yummm! I ate at a place like that once, one of the best meals of my life.

Currently working in web development for a company that does online fashion retail. I'm doing front end stuff at the moment, but I want to get back to back end and database work.
Dream job? Opening a bar on the beach. Once I get my act together that's my retirement plan.
I teach grade 6 French Immersion and do some personal training. Great with summers off and gym access. Lisa Bentley used to be an immersion teacher, so that's my reason for it being the right job!
I'm a buyer for a women's online cycling and triathlon retailer. I <3 my job, it's badass.

I'm an air traffic controller in the Vancouver area of BC - it's a fun job, good pay, nice shift work with days off usually mid-week (which means I get to avoid the crowds)...I'm not sure if it's my "dream job" but it certainly has lots of perks with the occasional few weeks of stress when everyone gets up flying or something goes not quite right....
Before kids, I was an elementary school teacher. Now I am frequently a substitute teacher at my kids' schools for teachers on maternity leave, and such.

I work as an associate editor for a business to business publication and also do some freelance writing.
My dream job: travel writer
Well right now I have one more semester of college as a math major. I'm currently the head lifeguard at the college pool - as the boss I get a whopping 25 cents per hour more than my supervisors and 50 cents per hour more than the regular guards. As much as I like algebra (not the kind you learn in middle school), making pretty pictures in Mathematica, and LaTeXing my senior project, its not practical unless you are in academia or something very specialized and I don't particularly enjoy being a student... I spend too many hours lifeguarding so I can stash money in my Roth IRA while my parents are still helping me with living expenses and too few hours doing homework.
So, after I graduate, I get to pick myself up and move wherever I can get a job since I have absolutely nothing tying me down to a specific location. Right now, the plan is to slowly work toward a CPA (also my initials) with night classes or something. I really don't like being a full time student, but I do like to work. I need to do something that's mostly quantitative, organized, logical, structured, and analytical but I'm not sure what at this point...
I know that I don't want to be a computer programmer even though it is an application of the algebra, stats, and graph theory stuff. I know it fits, but I just don't like doing it. I don't mind a little programming from time to time, but not all the time. I used to think I wanted to be an engineer and then a physicist, but I tried that for a while and it didn't click either.
catwood - sounds like you are looking at getting into a problem solving type of job. Take a look at Shainin or 6-Sigma. Now how with a math degree you can get into those fields I don't know. but they are generally just well trained math guys.
Working at non-profit organization managing our annual campaign. Needless to say, my job has become increasingly difficult and finding new ways to ask for money is always fun especially when I get nasty emails or letters back saying no way in hell are they donating right now. That really makes my day.
I'm a Naval Oficer currently sationed in Japan. Hey, I get paid to PT :)
FLY NAVY !!!!
I am a physicist. I work for the US Air Force (as a civilian, not military). I get to spend lots of your money developing really cool toys. As a side benefit they help keep the country safe, yadda yadda yadda.
I'm a controls engineer (degreed mechanical engr) working on contract for a large aircraft engines company. It's definately a good first job out of college, but not my dream job. I start work toward my MBA in June, I feel like my path is more in project management or finance in the future, but it's early to tell. Ideally I'd like to start my own small retail business, but that's pipe-dreaming right now.
I am a high school vice principal and l live in N.California near Sacramento. Work hours are somewhat flexible and have vacation days throughout the year which allow for training. My house is on the American River Bike trail, 30 miles of flat and safe biking!
OH yeah, I'm all for them! Two weeks at the beach, lounging in a hammock, sipping fruity drinks with umbrellas! Getting a tan. Doing body shots at Carlos 'n Charlies, just great!
Oh sorry. I thought you said "Vacations?"
Oh, so.., yeah. I started out as a teacher, phys. ed, then I switched to math.
I wrote a math textbook and now I do workshops for teachers, homeschoolers, etc. - the book is on my website: www.geoffwhite.ws
I had some other careers: insurance, publishing, owned a printshop, and now I have a part time job as a winemaker, no, really.

Mechanical Engineer working for my family's business in the bearing industry.
everybody has an interesting and awesome job 'cept me. :(
I'm a meterologist for the National Weather Service in Salt Lake City, Ut. The rotating shiftwork can be a little hard on my body, but it sure is nice have non-traditional days and hour off!
Plus, I get payed to look at the weather, something I'd be doing at home otherwise. It's a pretty great setup! (except for right now when it's 50 degrees outside, and I'm sitting inside working!!)

Happy new year!!
Just idly thinking...anyone care to share what they do for a living?
I am a mechanical engineer, I work for a defense contractor in southeastern CT. I also teach at my company's apprentice school.
My wife, also a triathlete, is a toxicologist at a pharmaceutical company.
I train with some carpenters, a painter, a bike shop owner, a pediatrician, a chef, a marketing person, a dentist, a police officer, a physician's assistant, amongst others.
Just curious what other's do. Maybe one of you has my dream job, and can tell me how to get it. ( I have no idea what my "dream job" is, so perhaps this is the start of my quest for it. :)
