I am only in my second year of TRI and training for my first 70.3 in New Orleans (April 5th). My wife has CE course in Pensacola 3 weeks later and there is an OLY that weekend. Any advice on whether this is too close to the other race?

In my opinion you will be fine. I did the same thing in my second year of triathlons and felt great during the Olympic.

I did it last year, using the Half as a long training day for my oly A race 3 weeks later. I can't say how you'll feel on the run since I didn't finish the bike, but I was riding faster than any previous oly, and after coming off my fastest swim of the season. It depends on your goals for the races, your ability to recover and your fitness. I was racing the half for a Clearwater spot, so I certainly didn't dog it (though I slogged through the half-mary at the end and missed a slot by about 6 min). After that, I continued with a relatively high volume for the next week and tapered 2 weeks going into the oly. I felt amazing and was moving much better than in my previous olys.

That said, the A race was my last of the season, so I did a full taper and didn't worry too much about anything afterwards. If you're using N.O. as an early season "A" race and will have a second one later in the year, you should have a solid taper going into New Orleans and you'll feel extremely sluggish coming into the oly 3 weeks later. It all depends on your goals for the season.

Everyone is different in the manner in which they recover. Other factors are involved as well. How hard you go on race day, heat, cramping issues, etc. I have been able to recover quickly from the HIM's I have done and would have had no ill effects 3 weeks later. I would do it.

Thanks for all of the advice. The half is definately the A race but since I have not done one I'm not sure how I'll recover. I think I'll go ahead and do it with few expectations other than satisfying my curiosity. Thanks again.

I did an Oly 3 weeks after IM Kansas (70.3) last year and totally rocked it! The run will be so easy you will finish in a PR for sure!
