Does anyone have any experience with the Vasa swim trainer? I have been looking at their products online, but have never seen one up close. Do they provide a real benefit over pool swimming? Are they worth the $$?

Doesn't Chuck Norris promote something like that? If he uses something like that then you know its gotta be good!

They say when Chuck Norris does pushups, he doesnt push himself up, rather he pushes the world down.

The team I swam on when I was younger owned one of these (swimmers had to use it if they forgot their suits)... And my parents bought one at some point - I remember using it for strength training.
Unless you have found a used model online for $50, I don't think that it is worth the money. You haven't filled out your profile, so I don't know much about your background... But if you are concerned about improving your swimming, the best thing you can do is log hours in the pool. Even better? Work with a coach. The money these retail for is equal to a couple years of swim team dues - and the swim team with a coach would help you improve much-much more.
Good luck!

I do have some experience with these as well from my swimming days.

I think the benefits are more for the dedicated pool swimmer rather than the triathlete, though you may find some of these uses benefitial at times:

1) It can replicate the feeling and stroke of freestyle, and you can put additional weight (raise the angle), to do stroke based strength training.
2) If you put it up against a wall, you can lay on your back and do pushoffs to strengthen your flip turn, obviously not really necessary for triathletes.
3) If you have an ear infection, you can use it to maintain feel and strength out of the water.
4) I would honestly reccomend just gettting stretch cordz, you attach them to a post and you can strengthen your stroke that way, can be done vertically (hanging overhead), or in front (you bend over while standing): http://www.swimoutlet.com/product_p/1225.htm

Thanks for the input. The company makes some pretty lofty claims on their website (http://www.vasatrainer.com/) regarding time savings in training for the swim and gains that could be made in improving swim form. It might be worth the $$ to me if their claims were true, but I don't see it. I think every serious age grouper would have one of these in the basement if it were that great.

We used them back in HS for dry land training to supplement work outs. They actually are helpful tools, but that was when I was putting 5 hours a day into swimming and was concerned about it. Again though not in replacement for a work out but rather as a supplement to it.

There is no replacement for the feeling you get from being in water.

seems to me like a bungee cord and a bench would do the same thing.
