So what are you eating?
#1: Protein Shake I make:
1 cup of cottage cheese, this has alot of high quality casein protein.
1/4 cup 1/2 cup eggwhites, this has alot of protein, but i use it to make it frothy
for flavoring: add in your favorite fruits, add in coffee, or add in a lil bit of chocolate powder. this is a great and easy shake that's very healthy, and you can also add flax or something like that to increase fiber and get a good amount of healthy fats.
tuna patties:
1 large can of tuna or 2 small cans, to where its about 2-3 servings, 1 tbsp egg whites, fav breading product to hold it together(i like bagel crisps or tomato basil wheat thins), and i add in parmesian cheese. cook on low heat till its fully cooked.
i also use bagel crisps and the wheat thins to cook breaded chicken, just put melted butter on the chicken and coat it and bake it.
or use other forms of canned fish to subsitute for tuna.
besides that, i use the heck outa my foreman. i just add herbs and spices and toss meat on the grill......
Blueberry Pop tarts. Snack of champions.
Smoothy: banana, frozen berries, OJ, and skim milk.

Popcorn! Orville's natural. A bit salty but otherwise only 135cal per bag and whole grain.
I use Whey Protein (GNC) and add skim milk and frozen blueberries for a lowfat/lowcal shake.
Fiber One Oats & Chocolate bars (yeah, not super healthy but not horrible either)
whole wheat pasta
apples, pears, and bananas
Just keep spinning....spinning, spinning....uh, do I know you?

Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwich on White Bread as pre workout food. I absolutely HATE brown bread (other than the pumpernicker and Rye)... life is too short to eat brown bread.
Then of course all of the other stuff that we all read about.

I give in to ice cream. I get the lowfat kind- I tell myself it's good for me- full of calcium (and the choc chips are dark...so, antioxidants)
It's my treat for the day, and I only have 1 serving if I was "bad" that day

Lol, antioxidants, I love it :)
It's weird. I used to do light ice cream and it was fine, but now nothing but full fat will do. Light just doesn't cut it anymore.

Full fat is ice cream, everything else is ice milk. I get those little cups of haagen das and @250cal each, I just run/ride an extra 20mins to compensate.

Mmmmmmm.....dark beer. If you haven't tried it Ayinger Celebrator is probably the most amazing double bock that I've ever had. Plus, you get both simple and complex carbs. It's a win - win proposition.

Cottage Cheese, Cool Whip, Pineapple, Gelatin mix powder.
It started as the only way I could tolerate cottage cheese, so it was pretty heavy on the other stuff. Now I sprinkle a little of the other stuff on.
Once a year for a couple weeks I fall off the "good diet". Today is the last day of my See-Food Diet - I see food, I eat it...
So tomorrow training and the good, healthy diet start anew!

I'm terrible!! I workout five or six days a week....some days two workouts with a swim and bike...and I eat like crap! I started this week on Fitday to track my eating and it was a shock. No veggies, occasional fruit...how can I get on track? I like carbs and cheese. I'm mad at myself because I work so hard cardio wise that this is one aspect I have a hard time with. I'm not overweight (128 at 5'3) but could be a 10# thinner and then faster!!! Advice???
I was just thinking about posting such a topic. I'm sick of oatmeal, raisins and walnuts for breakfast.
I make a big pot of soup on Sunday and eat that every day for lunch. I've only got two good recipes right now. Minestrone - just throw a bunch of crap in a pot with beef, beef broth and italian seasoning. Good. I use sweet potatoes and beans as the main ingredients.
Mexican tortilla soup - I can't remember the recipe. Chicken, beans (lots of em), corn, onions, chicken broth. I tried tomatoes in there once. Not so good.

Well, everyone is different, as you will see from the many responses. I am a big believer of keeping your favorite "crap" in your diet or life is just no fun. For me, the key is preparation. If I have a bunch of healthy foods prepped and ready to go in the fridge then I will eat them. Make a list of all the foods that are both healthy and taste good to you, then make a weekly plan to eat them and stick with it just like you stick to your training plan. Keep some "treats" on the plan for fun. I promise, it will get easier as you go and some of it will become habit after a while.
Other favorites:
Whole wheat frozen waffles (toasted) wrapped around chocolate frozen yogurt with banana slices and pecans
hummus and whole wheat pita chips
homemade smoothies (of course!)
homemade guacamole: (avocado, lime juice, red onion, cilantro, salt, pickled jalepenos) so healthy that it deserves a margarita to go with it : )
Items I am trying to eat more of:
Green tea
shitake mushrooms
fish
bigger variety of produce
beans

bonus tip: if the ice cream you are eating happens to have a peanut butter swirl running thru it: protein!
top that with fruit, and you practically have a meal in a bowl :)

Kind of these antithesis of the OP, but if you could only eat one thing for each meal for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Cheeseburger. you get carbs, protein, veggies, dairy, and fat. fruit if you add pineapple. the pyramid in a meal.
which then leads to the question - is In & Out a "health food" restaurant? :) That makes one heck of an alternative.

I tried that soy cheese the other day after about 10 minutes of encouragement from my wife. I think I have eaten better tasting cardboard.
Right now?
A big Chocolate Muffin and a fresh pot of coffee, laced w/egg nog.
Last night: Lasagna
New Year's Eve: Chinese food
Tuesday: Chinese Smorg: sweetnSour Pork, Ginger beef, Almond Chicken, yumm!
Monday: I forget.
Last Friday: Peppersteak at the Italian Kitchen. Copious quantities of red wine.
Breakfast is Porridge M-F, eggs/toast Sat/Sun, occasionally a bagel'n cream cheese.
Any questions?

No questions. Only a comment. Many of us mere mortals would weigh 1000 lbs on that kind of consumption. Just more proof that you are indeed royalty, oh Prince of Clydes.
For everybody else, my request was truly made in earnest, but I am getting more sarcasm than suggestions. Guess I am on my own for this one.
That which does not kill me makes me faster...
I'd like some recipes too....I'm going to try the tuna patties. Haven't really found a smoothie recipe I like...so any suggestions would be great.
Sorry Toni, no sarcasm intended.
Humour, yes.
Nutrition on race day is important of course, but I think too much of a fuss is made about diet generally.
I'm not suggesting one eats at fast food joints all the time either.
I pretty much eat what I please when I please and my body tells me what is too much, or too bad for me.
I know enough about food for athletes in training to make adequate choices without being fanatical about it and that not everyone is so fortunate, but as long as I can remain active I don't worry about what I eat.
Good habits I guess.
I'll offer this insight though - often when we think we are hungry and need a snack, we only think we are hungry. All our bodies are really telling us, is that we are in need of water. Try drinking a pint of water instead of making a snack.

Actually, my issue is gaining weight and/or getting enough calories in a day while training. I did not include that info in my original post because I know most people are not in that situation. My thinking was this: we all get bored from time to time. we all probably have a few great recipes that we have tried over the years for healthy snack, dinners, smoothies. Why not share our favorites with each other just to mix it up.
Like you, I believe there should be plenty of room in my diet for great food and wine...and I eat what I like often. I am a pro with an Italian take out menu, even though I will never be a pro triathlete ; ) But for all the times when I want good fuel, I find I am returning to the same things over and over. I was hoping all the trifuelers would offer their suggestions so we could expand our range a little. I don't think I am alone here. But oddly, for a group that can rhapsodize for pages about GU flavors, I did not get much in the way of feedback! Oh well! Can't win em' all.

I have a couple of great smoothie suggestions and a recipe for chicken enchiladas that rocks. PM me if you are interested and I'll send them your way.

OHHHH, well then, that's different!
When I was trying to get to 200lbs (back in college days) my favourite weight gain snack was:
Graham wafers, topped with peanut butter and slices of banana.
This is much more fun!

Graham wafers, topped with peanut butter and slices of banana.
I'll second this.
Also, ritz crackers with cheese and meat. And I don't mean a block of cheddar - swing by a place like whole foods and they have a bank of cheeses that you can sample and buy. And sliced or chunked turkey/chicken.
As for GU - I love the mint chocolate holiday flavor.

I perceived the idea of the original post was that you were stuck on an ultra strict healthy diet and needed some support in giving yourself permission to cheat once in a while, but at the same time not going overboard. I believe that most of the posts reflect this as well. The point of many was that if we are training so hard and burning so many calories it is OK to enjoy ourselves and eat what we like, in moderation.
Some ideas to increase calories: Add frozen yogurt or an extra banana to the smoothy recipe I mentioned above. That will add some healthy calories. Eat a PBJ sandwich before and after long workouts and sometimes during. Use all natural peanut butter with honey, concord grape jelly, and whole wheat or 12 grain bread. To increase calories make them on a bagel.

yup, that's what I thought you meant...I don't have any ultra lowfat healthy snacks, but I like apple chunks shmeared with PB and drizzled with honey; or cut up some apples, sprinkle with cinammon and sugar/ substitute, add chopped nuts and bake for 40 min. at 350. Very yummy with or w/o frozen yogurt

I love whole wheat bagels with almond butter, orange blossom honey (or more recently agave nectar), and 1/2 a sliced banana after a workout.
Although sometimes it's good on some artisan bread or focaccia.
I also love making fish tacos and kabobs.
Tacos:
Cornmeal taco shell (or whole wheat tortilla for soft)
Favorite fish (I recommend mahi mahi ) grilled, touch of sea salt, pepper, olive oil
Pico de gallo (1 chopped tomato, 1/2 red onion, 2 chilies/chipotle, 2 tsp sea salt, 2 tsp coarse pepper, 1 tbsp lime juice, and sometimes 1/4 cup diced pineapple)
Guacamole (2 fresh avocados, 1/2 chopped red onions, 2 serrano chilies, 3 leaves fresh cilantro, 1 tbsp lime juice, 1 tbsp sea salt, 2 tsp coarse pepper, 1-2 chopped roma tomato)
Southwest Slaw (2 cups fine shredded green cabbage, 2 tsp of lime juice/honey/minced red onion/fresh cliantro, 1 tsp sea salt, 1 tsp pepper. Let set for 30 mins min)
Fresh Crema (1/2 cup sour cream, 1 tsp fine grated lime zest, 3 tsp lime juice, pepper, touch of sea salt)
Kabobs:
Fresh mahi mahi cubed (2-3")
1/2 red onion cut in quarters
peppers (bell/poblano/serrano(hot)/chipotle/your call)
1-2 roma tomatoes quartered
1 cup fresh pineapple cubed (2-3")
sea salt, olive oil, soaked wooden skewers, pepper, favorite glaze (teriyaki, orange, curried tomato, tandoori, mango and red pepper, ect)
alternate ingredients on soaked skewers, lightly rub with olive oil, salt, pepper, grill for 5 mins turning 4 times, apply glaze and cook 30sec each side.
Yummy.......if you dont like fish I guess you could sub chicken, but mahi mahi is where it's at trust me.

get a banana and a jar of Peanut Butter and spread the PB on as you go
Right now? Coffee and dark chocolate covered Oreos. It's health food, really.
Maybe I shouldn't talk about my breakfast habits: either donuts or pop tarts. :)
Lunch: the soup I made over the weekend, have had potato soup, chili, tortilla soup, after Thanksgiving we used the left-over Turkey carcass to make some real turkey broth and made Turkey noodle soup.
Dinner: either more soup, or a hamburger/chicken/tuna helper, and gotta have some potatos. :)
Desert: Ice Cream or pudding or brownies.
So, some healthy, some not so healthy.
I just made homemade trail mix...
mix nuts of your choice (I use pecans, walnuts and almonds) about 3/4 cup each, some pumpkin seeds, and some oats in a pan.
On the stove boil 3/4 c maple syrup with a cinammon stick and some vanilla.
dispose of the cinammon stick and pour over nuts mixture. mix well
bake in oven for 20 min at 350 degrees and then let it sit in the turned off oven for an hour or two (to dry), then add dry cherries, raisins or whatever else (choc chips, anyone?)
my whole house smells YUM
Taper Naked
Darnit, DARNIT! the house smells so darn good, from the trail mix drying in the oven that I dipped into to chocolate truffle box of torture that has been calling my name for the past 2 weeks and I have ignored it so well. Darn trail mix- I was just TRYING to make a healthy treat!!!!!! But... in my defense, if there is any to be had (I hang my head in SHAME), I took a bite of 3-4 truffles, threw out what I didn't like and only ate one whole one. Do I still get my serving of trail mix?!

Of course! And what is 1 truffle worth? Maybe 15mins in your aerobic zone?
I am trying your trailmix recipe this week. Dried cherries and cranberries.

I feel like I have a pretty good handle on nutrition and I eat pretty clean. But I am sorta bored right now. I feel like I am in a rut, falling back on the same healthy foods over and over again. I love my organic yogurt/organic raspeberries/almond granola treat but after the millionth serving, I need to find another evening snack or ice cream is going to start to call to me.
How about we all share our favorite healthy treats. I don't mind cooking or baking so don't be afraid to post if it takes effort to make.
So what are y'all eating?
