Doing my 'B' Race Before My 'A' Race: Yes or No?

I'm enrolled in the Rhode Island HIM this coming summer, which is my 'A' race, and I'm considering doing an Olympic, the 'B' race, prior to it. The RI HIM is on 7/12 and the Olympic would be on 5/16. It's my first HIM and it's my priority of the season but the Olympic is far enough out. My fear is that it would disrupt my training for the HIM, especially considering I have never done one before.

Looking for some guidance...

You will be fine. Plenty of time for recovery and it will be a good test and something on the calendar to keep you on schedule with your training. I wouldn't change up your training for the Olympic, nor would I put everything into on race day causing you to take recovery time. But if you treat it as a brick/training day you should be able to take an active rest day following the race and then get right back to your training.

+1 - there is plenty of time for recovery so stick to your HIM training plan and give yourself a day or two off before the race as well as after the race

+ 2-- Realistically you could do one even a month before just for training (and dont completely hammer it). I'm not saying do that though. Stick to those two races and you should be good. Make sure that the week after that olympic race you taper. You will have plenty of rest up until your next race. As a matter of fact, it's better to get some races under your belt before your "A" race as part of training and to get your body used to racing.

My "A" race is nationals (an olympic distance). i'm doing 2 olympics and 4 sprints beforehand (spread out over 3 months) just to get some speed going on before my major race.

good luck on your races

There is 9 weeks between the races so there is time to recover, but...

The real question is how much time?

Will you taper for the 'B' race? 1 day, 2-3?
How much time for recovery before you are back on your normal training schedule? 1-2, 3?

I would look at your training plan and see how inserting the race affects the days prior to and following the 'B' race. The workouts that you are missing are building blocks for the next block of your prep for your 'A' race.

So depending on your taper and recovery you could affect up to a full week of your training to do the race. Or depending on your fitness it could be pretty minimal and use the race as some good speed work.

Sounds like a perfect tune-up race for your A priority race. Good time to test gear and shake things out. With 9 weeks to recover I would worry about going pretty hard. Just stay healthy! No injuries and I set up my schedule so my B races fall on the third week of a build cycle (hardest week) so I have a recovery week after as part of the program.

I tune up race or 2 is a good idea. Everybody is different, but I would do a B race up to 3 weeks prior to my A race.

Potts did Kona then Clearwater right after ;p. So I think you'll be fine with an Olympic Distance race 2 MONTHS before a HIM. I know Pott's Is a pro, I'm just saying ;p.

I'd do it. I'm training for 2 HIMs as my A races this year (Aug 1, and Sept 27) and I am looking for a June Oly as a tune-up race, as well as participating in some B/C sprint races or other events.
I plan on doing well at the HIMs, but I also need the other earlier races to practice the little things (transition, nutrition, etc...) and to keep my motivation high.
In fact, the bulk of my B/C races are usually prior to my A race.

Go for it, just make sure it stays B in priority...don't let it shift into too much of your focus as it gets near. GL

I personally prefer a shorter distance tune up close to my a race. Like one or two weeks before. Sprints work nice. Short enough to recovery fully from, and your legs get a solid speed workout in.

Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.
