2 OLYs in three weeks?
If I were to do the first one in Coeur d'Alene, I'd probably not push it, just work on transitions, nutrition, etc for the one 2 weeks later. Definitely not pushing hard. Sounds like the 8/23/09 race is definitely your A goal race, so definitely save up for it to kick some butt and make the team. Just my .02
I think it's awesome to have these goals! My mother-in-law is a little younger and I watched her sit on the couch under a blanket for the last four days!!! Drive me crazy...anyway...I don't have much experience but just thought I'd say I hope to be just like you at that age. Good luck with whatever you choose to do.
I'm not really sure about how other people feel, but I wouldn't personally feel that two olympics in three weeks would be too detrimental, but i dont really have any evidence to back that up. I have done two in two weeks (both on Sundays) and it didn't really affect me too bad. As a matter of fact, i actually performed better the second race.

Go! Set your training cycle to peak for the Nats and use the 8/8 race to trim off the rough edges...just don't go too hard in 1 so you can spank everyone else in 2.

That schedule isnt hard at all. 2 weeks is plenty of time for recovery, I actually prefer clumping my races like this. Might even try to find a sprint to throw in that middle week. Plan for the peak, taper, and race and you shouldnt have any problems.

It seems we have two camps here: Some are saying two Olys in three weeks isn't that bad. True. If you are the type who races just for the hell of it and are content with a MOP finish, then yes, two Olys in this timeframe isn't that remarkable. (I know of a few trifuelers who did the IM KY and IM Moo in consecutive weekends. The point is, though, they weren't competing for Kona spots.)
The other camp leans more to the conservative side, suggesting the first race is just a long brick and to focus instead on Nationals two weeks after. Maybe y'all missed it, but he is 69 years 'young' and he is competing for a Nationals spot. These events and fields aren't like Ma and Pa Kettle's Pancake Flip N' Sprint at the local Y. In deference to Ralph, I imagine recovery at 69 is probably a bit more lengthy than at 29, 39 or 49.
If you (Ralph) competed at Nationals this year, I suspect you don't really need the CDA race to work out nutrition and transitions. I bet you have those nailed already. I'd take the CDA weekend for regular training. You stated that you already raced CDA as it is in your hometown. Great, now just go watch, and target the NW Regional Qualifier. Then again, I'm the outlier who only races one tri a year.

Funny, I placed top of my age group in a sprint and oly on back to back weekends. I know I am not the only one. Planning, training, and execution. If you train for a MOP finish, you will get an MOP finish, you train and plan for a FOP, you can get there. Racing shorter distances stimulates the body and lets you iron out kinks in your race plan, in addition to exposing an weaknesses you may have.
The OP may be 69, but his finishing would be relative to his AG. With his established fitness, I dont doubt the recovery turn around would be that bad, assuming he follows a Peak/ Race plan with low duration activity during the week between the races.

+1 supporting Both trisooner and triguy, each providing valid points. It is most likely harder for someone at 69 to recover, yet i know (and have experienced myself) people placing high in their age group/overall at both races in 2 weeks. To play on the safe side, I would recommend following trisooner's advice, but it is definitely plausible to do well in 2 races in 2 weeks.

I did 3 in 4 weeks in 07 all within 30 seconds of each other -- but I was 20 and in the shape of my life.
hey, I'm finding that, as I age (53 this year), I need more recovery time after workouts and races. But I really think 2 Olys in 3 weeks is doable, maybe even easily doable. I think the key is to focus on recovery, not training, during the 3 weeks between the races. Mix in a few short sprint workouts to keep you sharp, but I'd go for it!

I'm planning my summer season (as I look out the window at the 8+ feet of snow we have so far in North Idaho) and want your input. I had planned to do the Coeur d'Alene, ID OLY Tri again this August (8/8/09) (age group 3rd last year) because it is my local race but then found out that the NW Regional Qualifier for the 2010 USAT Age Group Nationals are in Portland, OR on 8/23/09. Your thoughts about doing two OLYs in three weeks? Since I will be 69 in 2010, I would have the best chance of qualifying for the World Team for 2011 (just to say that I was on the team one time in my life) as they roll the 69s into the 70-74 age group for the world qualification list. If I am going to do it, that probably would be the year. (I was 17th in the 65-69 age group at Nationals this year but after they added the 64 year olds, didn't make the team). What do the rest of you think?
