No its not a typo, how can I make 2009 resolutions if I don't at least reflect on my 2008 resolutions. To be honest Triathlons were not even on the radar last New Years but fatherhood was staring me in the eyes and I new I needed to change my ways. I was smoking 2 packs a day and drinking every day. Now I'm running, biking, swimming, and doing things called bricks. Last years resolution was to become a healthier, thinner me, which I have did though diet, weight training and cardio.(but still have a long way to go). I no longer smoke and don't drink near as much (more a social drinker now) I completed my first 5k race (actually 5). I have dropped 40lbs but starting at 260 I have a ways to go. Physically, I can Bench and Squat more than I could as a Senior in High School. I'm enjoying working out and improving my body. Plus I am happier and have a lot more energy. Now that I've discovered Triathlon training I'm stoked.

So My 2009 NEW YEARS RESOLUTIONS are to:
Place in AG in a 5k
Complete a 10k, 12k and Half Marathon
Complete my first Sprint Triathlon
Complete my First Olympic Triathlon
Maybe-Complete my First HIM
Drop another 30lbs-should be no problem if I do the rest.
Oh yea and I'm giving up alcohol completely from New Years Day until March 14th after the Azalea Sprint in Wilmington NC.

Enough about me though.
Does anyone else have a good story from 2008?
What's your 2009 New Years Resolutions/Goals?

Good for you try2try. I hope you continue to meet your goals.

My 31 goal was and will continue to be to keep my priorities straight with training, racing and family. I tri to make myself a better father and husband and enhance life in general. If I train properly and can race well that is a bonus. I had a great season last year and PR's in each tri I did. I still think I can get better.

Tri Goals for 2009: Train smart, stay healthy, and finish Chessyman in the daylight.

trytotry I am so proud of you! Quitting smoking and drinking is no small feat! I hope you are enjoying fatherhood too! I have no doubt that you will meet most or all of those goals this year. Even if you only meet half of them, you will still have a year to be proud of.

This is my 2nd season of triathlon and I have similar races scheduled: a duathlon, a sprint, an oly, a half mary and an HIM. I'd love to complete all of them, but I will be happy if I just get to most of them. On a non triathlon related note, I have a personal goal of saving enough money to take my whole family to Europe in November for an educational vacation for my kids. Learning Spanish before we go is another big goal. It's going to be a challenging year!

Great job try2try! Excellent job this year and sounds like you have another awesome year to come!

FYI, something to be proud of is that with the 40 pounds lost, that's effectively 72,000 pounds your body has to push over the course of just 1 mile! (guess that a step is about 3 feet when running, meaning about 1800 steps in a mile, times 40 pounds per step (since you're stepping on 1 leg at a time). Totalling 72,000 pounds less that your body has to move and deal with every mile. :) Great job! The more you lose, the "easier" it will be to meet those goals.

I've noticed the same...losing 20 pounds this year. :) That's only 36,000 pounds per mile, but still, quite a noticeable difference. I did 5 sprints in 2008, the last one being 14 minutes faster than the first one. :) That 20 pounds gone was an excellent help in cutting the time, oh yeah, not to forget the ton of training! :)

2009 goals: Half Marathon in January, HIM in October-ish time. Maybe I'll throw in an Olympic mid-way through the year as a training for the HIM.

2008 goal was achieve a 8:xx/mi split for 10k (2007 I was +/- 9:5x/mi)
I have improved my running to get into a 8:0x/mi split for 5k, and I'm still working on maintaining that speed for 10k, but a lot of good progress this past year!

Goals are to drop 10 lbs by May 1.
Finish an oly tri in 2:20 or better
Get my long run times down to 7:20/mile but still stay in Zone 3 of HR
1:30 1/2 marathon
Podium finish in my AG at least once.

Most of all though, I am hoping for my wife and I to have a healthy baby when he is due to arrive in March. The baby may also have a slight impact on these goals but I am still going to try.

My goals over the last 2 years have been to complete longer events than the year before. 2009 might be my last year to do that with my IM. I don't plan on doing any ultra's in 2010. This year I've added a goal of qualifying for Boston.

I didn't make any serious 2008 resolutions, but I did decide in May that I was 5'8" 267lbs and pretty sick of it. Figured I'd be 300 if I didn't do something so I decided enough was enough. My goal for the rest of 2008 was to make it to below 200 by 1/1/2009. Today I am 200.6 and I hope to be under by Thursday. I also reached a long term goal of becoming a manager at my job which was a 3 year goal I met in just under 3 years. 2008, for all its trials and difficulties, was a good year for me.

In 09 I hope to be comfortably at my maintenance weight, about 165 or so for me I think is good, give or take 5lbs, and to finish (respectably) at least one Sprint tri. (There's a three series here in June/July/Aug) If I can do this and maintain my new lifestyle I'll be successful in 09 for me. I want to strengthen my family and marriage too.

2010 will build from there. Best of luck to all that have goals for this year.

Just keep spinning....spinning, spinning....uh, do I know you?

Hello. My 2008 was not quite what I expected and actually it sucked. So I can't wait to write my top four for tris and here they are: loss weight (12 pounds by April), run Ave of Giants marathon and qualify to Boston 2010 at the same time and do a 1/2 IM.
Good luck to all.

Way to go to all of you who have made 2008 a year of commitment to great health and fitness, that's really impressive!

I don't really do New Year's resolutions, but try to live each day with as much joy as possible and take what comes along. I have lots of plans for this year though, and hope many of them come to pass (especially excited about doing a triathlon weekend with hubby! and also he is maybe getting excited about swimming the Alcatraz Sharkfest together, what a guy)

I had an awesome race year and reached three BIG goals:

Completed my first 50-mile run
Completed my first 100K run
Finished a HIM for the first time under six hours

I couldn't be any happier with 2008! But more importantly, I learned so much about myself and those around me. Goals for '09? Too many to write down here... :)

I won't comment on the 08 goals... but 2009 goal are personal rather than tri related this year:
1) Find a long term coping strategy for the depression/anorexia that has plagued me on and off for the past 6 years or so by the time I graduate (after that I'll have to pay for it myself). I've been working on that a lot this semester already, but there have been issues with allergies to meds, counselor on maternity leave, academics, etc... I'm smart [I went to MIT for my first 2.5 years of college (finishing up now with 2.5 Whitman as a math major) and got a 1500 on my GRE], but I get so lethargic (compounded since I don't like eating) that no homework gets done and I skip class so I'm going to graduate with a 2.6 or something awful like that... I'm so sick of being a failure.
2) Begin exercising again after a 6-month hiatus. I will not make any rigid training plans this year, I just want to be healthier and get back to the point where I love it again.
3) Actually graduate... (I'm setting up homework/class attendance commitment contracts at www.stickk.com so that I will lose my own money (which I really care about) if I don't follow through.
4) Well I have plans for after graduation (intense summer accounting program then move somewhere I can get a job and slowly work towards a CPA), but they are contingent on me actually graduating. I like to make plans much better than following through with them.

My gosh, catwood. I feel like I am reading a post from my younger self! I killed myself to get good grades in school and then almost bankrupted my parents with my pricey private university tuition bills, followed by anorexia. I am so glad you are in counseling now. I waited until my mid thirties to get a handle on my obsessive issues and wish I had started earlier. There is hope. I no longer have an eating disorder. I have a beautiful family and I know what is truly important. I look back on that foolish confused young girl (me, not you!) and I just want to tell her to relax. School and careers are interesting pursuits but they will never give you the satisfaction or the joy of good relationships, both with others and with yourself.

Stop beating yourself up, kiddo. You are a smart girl and your GPA will never change that. You have nothing to prove to anyone. Spend some time figuring out what will bring you joy (is it really being a CPA?) and then pursue it. I wish you all the best! More than you know.

Like Toni said Catwood, so much of your story reads like something from my past as well. It's probably more common than not that folks who struggle with anorexia are like you also smart and driven, maybe a bit prone to high-stress jobs and situations and to sports like triathlon.

I will keep you in my thoughts because I know what a deep and pervasive thing it can be to struggle with anorexia. But also I know that you can move through it and beyond it and find a life for yourself where it no longer controls you. When I was younger, the external things like my grades, what I ate, my weight, my workouts and race results were all-important. Letting go of that took time, but enabled a life where the focus goes outward to experience the joy of everything around. I wish you well in your journey, you sound like a very strong and smart gal with a solid plan. Be sure to let us know how it all goes!
