i'm wondering what the average amount of training or time i need to spend training for an IM or half IM....realistically IM is about 3 years(at least) a way, but i might do half IM after this coming up season, i've only got a couple races planned. I'm gonna do an olympic as my first race, then a du, then probly a half marathon, and the olympic and du will be for fun, and the half marathon will be my main race.

Depends on where you are starting from.

I did an HIM in my first season with 20 weeks of training leading up to it and 4 other Sprint or Olys thrown in. I was coming from a background of 1 marathon, 1 half marathon, and a bunch of adventure races so I was not starting from scratch.

If someone is coming off the couch I'll bet he or she could 'finish' an HIM with 20 weeks of training and maybe do a sprint or two. If you look at the training plans out there 90% are based on a 20 week program.

I have not yet done an IM so I cannot speak on that but I plan to do my first one in 2010 season which will give me 3 years of build up.

First Ironman is three years out? A 'big picture' plan for 2011 might look like this:

  1. 2009: Sprint- and Olympic-distance in-season; Fall road races of 5ks and 10ks
  2. 2010: Olympic-distance and 70.3; 100k 'charity' bike rides; Fall road races of 13.1 and one marathon in the winter/early spring of 2011
  3. 2011: 70.3 about 8-12 weeks prior to 140.6; 100k 'charity' bike rides

And a few tips for long-term planning: Train more. Race less (ie, choose only one or two tris a season that actually excite you, plus one or two A-level road races, but put 250+ hours of training per year). Choose your IM based on the training weather you will have at home (eg, living in Texas, I will never do a Summer/Fall IM again, only Spring). Between the tri seasonand road race season, take time off to do something else. It is both a physical and mental break.

Another +1 to TriSooner. That sounds like a great plan. The great thing is, if you put in this kind of schedule, by the time you get to the IM there will be no question that you will be able to finish and feel strong.

20 weeks should be plenty of time assuming you have a base already,, make it fun,, join a tri club if you can,, or cycling / running club (if no Tri club in the area) as its more fun to have some one to chase around and you wont burn out hopefully,, Or maybe hire a local coach that has group workouts,, helped me alot as I tend to get lazy if I know it's just me and my bike ....
good luck... make it fun too

to all you guys, thanks for the info: here is my background:

first tri season coming up, i was gonna do a sprint last year, but life got in the way, and was not able to train, i went to the race to cheer on friends, but am looking forward to doing it. i've got an okay base, i can run 10k @ about a 10 min pace, i've always been a weightlifting freak and its hard to leave the heavy weights for endurance stuff. however, i play ultimate frisbee and am a part of the local team, and next season is the biggest season for us, as we are going to about 2-3 tournaments at least, and are looking for more to go to....and i'm getting more competitive(or trying to) at racquetball as well, t hats why i'm only doing about 3-4 races, w/ lots of time in between. i start my olympic training in jan, i'll be on the 13 week plan from beginner triathlete w/ 2x bike 2x run and 2x swim. then i might do a duathlon(i'm seriously thinking about just biting the bullet and doing 2 tri's, but i HATE swim workouts, the duathlon is just a copout) so i might check out other tri's in the southeast, maybe for july or august, and a few road races.

whats the 70.3 and 140.6 that yo speak of?

70.3 = half ironman distance (1.2mi swim + 56mi bike + 13.1 mi run)
140.6 = ironman distance (2.4mi swim, 112mi bike + 26.2mi run)
