Imagine yourself competing in the jungle and finishing in front of the historic Maya temples!
The Gran Jaguar Triathlon will be held in Tikal, Guatemala on May 2nd 2009, 2km swim, 90km bike and 21km run.

$10000 in prizes..
For more information write to Rodolfo Quiñones at rodolfo@bicimaniaguate.com, he is one of the organizers.

Here is my input on the 2008 race, this past Nov 29.

You must do this race next year.. it's gonna be awesome!!! The event was planned carefully and the people involved carried it out perfect... I really recomend it!!

The swim: Lake Peten Itza is a mirror like portion of water surrounded by a really cool scenery. The water was perfect!!! Super calm, nice temperature.. I really enjoyed swiming there.. man... you should see the views!! Incredible sunrises/sunsets.

The bike: The road from the island of Flores to Tikal is really good, no major issues there.. flat portions, then ups and downs.. and the big climb "El Caoba".. that's a challenge.. but it gives the race a degree of difficulty that makes it a real challenge.

The run: After you leave your bike in T2 at Tikal's parking lot, you start running into the park, going through the jungle, hearing all the birds and endless types of species that live there.. it is reaally cool! then you go through the ruins and man.. what a view.. all those temples... and you get a sensation of acomplishment just passing by through all that history....

The finish line place in "La Plaza Mayor" where the most representative of the temples are.. tooooo coooool!!!!

This is a great opportunity for anyone who wants to travel and see the beauty of one of the ancient cultures of the American Continent.. added to a perfectly planned race!!

Hope this helps!

I'll post some pics soon!

Sounds very cool. Can you provide some info on travel and accomodations (which airport to fly into, how far it is from the race start, what hotel(s) are nearby, etc.)?

Also, was the run mosquito laden, by any chance? And what's the weather like in May? (Rain? Heat?)....

Thanks in advance

o.k. guys.. here we go.. first of all the organizers have changed and transformed this year.s race into a world class event.. not only because of the careful planning but the major involvement of local authorities, the course itself was well chosen and all of the new sponsors that were able to chip in for the prizes.. which drew attention from several international athletes (US, CAN, ARG, HONDURAS, EL SALV, COSTA RICA..etc..).

Then, the web page. The webpage (spanish/english) is being created as we speak so shortly i.ll post the address.

Travel info: Acommodations can vary since there are a lot of nice hotels in the area.. some are cheap and some not so much.. but the host hotel was HOTEL MAYA INTERNATIONAL. I gotta tell you.. perfect location, really good food and is located at the lake.. so the view is incredible (http://www.villasdeguatemala.com/). Also you can check the hotels at the island of Flores.

Airport: Peten has the Flores Intl Airport locaed 45 mins away from Tikal and 5 away from the HOTEL MAYA INTERNATIONAL which is where the swim took place this year. So basically you would leave home to the airport and arrive into Guatemala City.s airport and then connect to Flores airport.

Peten.s weather is hot... and since it.s located near the jungle.. it.s kind of humid but tolerable. Nothing to worry about.. but don.t forget your salt pills..

There is a decent wind in peten most of the time, so mosquitos.. i wouldn.t worry about that much.

We.re working with Tritheworld to get this event posted on their webpage so they can manage all of this stuff for you, but in the meantime keep asking me your questions and i.ll gladly help you come to Guate and have a perfect race and stay here... let me know of your thoughts...

While Guatamala and Tikal ARE beautiful, I cannot imagine doing a tri there in May. We visit Belize every year, typically in December or January. Even then, on the water it is HOT and humid (typically in the 80's). Just running down the beach at 6 am is warm. For me, May and inland would be unbearable (esp with cold rainy winters to train in).

We adopted a baby girl from Guatamala this last year, and she is a dream come true! Hopefully in a few years I'll get around to doing this race (I'm not even 18, not aloud!! haha, 1 more year to go), and using it as a vacation to bring her back where she was born.

Leo, I am really interested in doing this race. Can you tell me about how much I should budget for travel and hotel and how long does it take to travel there. Also, are there any regional concerns like is the water clean, is it safe to travel there? I'd love any other details about the area or the race. It sounds so great my husband might even do it with me.

ok, here is a more detailed info on the traveling arrangements.

Airfare: Go to www.taca.com and select your city. Choose "Flores, Guatemala - FRS" as your destination. I checked departing from MIA and ending up in Flores and the result was about $400, which is a pretty good price considering that only the flight from Guatemala City to Flores is about $120 one way (and the flight lasts about 45 mins).

Here are the hotels who where hosts to the athletes this year. Check them out. The rates are around $60 to $75 for a double room in these hotels as a special rate for this event. (you can get cheaper rates in the island of flores, but they're kind of just a place to sleep you know.. no views or anything)

HOTELS:

HOTEL CASONA DEL LAGO

GRAN HOTEL DE LA ISLA

HOTEL PETEN ESPLENDIDO

HOTEL MAYA INTERNACIONAL
(http://www.villasdeguatemala.com/)

Also you can check out this site...http://www.visitguatemala.com/nuevo/mainE.asp

Regional Concerns: Tap water is clean, nothing to worry about there.. but for just in case, if you want to drink water, stick to the bottled type.

The food: You can find really cheap options as well as high end gourmet dishes. Your choice on this one, but for a good meal you can spend around $10 a piece. Breakfast is usually included in your hotel rate. (There's a Burger King in Flores, just in case)

Tikal's national Park ticket costs $25 (included if you're competing).

There is the Yaxha National Park and Ixpanpajul http://www.ixpanpajul.com/en/
Here you can go an do really cool stuff, check the website.

There is a big convinience store near all the hotels where you buy whatever you need.

The exchange rate is about Q7.50 for US$1.

Let me know if you need more info. This is all i can think about right now!!! It would be great if you come!!
