Must have/use supplements?
I supplement my diet with a heavy daily dose of Fig Newtons. They're a good filler, have great taste, and provide lots of energy.
But that's just as a supplement. I figure I get most of my real nutrition from McDonalds and Arbys.
Honestly, I don't know how people do it. When I'm training more than six hours a week, I can't keep my stomach from growling all day long. I pile on all the carb-rich calories I can find just to keep myself from going crazy. Between the cases of Fig Newtons and the bags of Chips Ahoy, it's a wonder I don't weigh 300 pounds.
So, good luck with the healthy eating habits. I haven't been able to do it.
I eat about 5-6 times a day, and my stomach always is growling. But I have found I cannot eat as much at one sitting either. The main thing that helps me though is hot water based soup with noodles, the asian variety.
As for supplements. Fish Oil and Glucosamine in the morning with a Multivitamin.
Gu, orange flavor and Cyctomax orange. Fig Newtons and bananas. The only stuff I can handle for long distances.
MPH Secretologue One before I go to bed, and yes it does help and ARX in the mornings before I work out.
I have heard a lot of people talking about how whey protein doesn't digest that much in your body and it just goes in and out your system without being used, i used to use that as a after workout/recovery type drink but honestly didn't see any extra muscle but the recovery seemed fine. I now use chocolate milk.. sounds crazy but if you think about it makes sense, you have the sugar, carbs, protein, and fat your body needs to recover and it tastes way better than protein.. i use 1% milk with chocolate syrup.. check out this link:

While using this i have noticed muscle change in my body, i really have and i am pleased with how much more filled i am and the more muscle i have.
As for supplements, just a mens multi-vitamin, flax oil, and fish oil just for the reasons that these are good for you and your body (kind of a health nut). I know its hard but if you can get your diet perfect and just right you perform much much better and feel better
+1 on the chocolate milk vs protein powders; as well as the fish-oil and multi.
I don't use any supplements. First off, I hate the fact that most of them tear up your liver.
I shouldn't say any though, i do use Redbull before races. I also will occasionly use Vo2 (forget who its made by) its just a huge shot of b12 right before a work out, if im going past zone 3.

1. Every day .....
8. I like .......
Holy smokes! I use supplements, but I also belive that I should eat things that aren't pills! Wow. I do a multi, fish oil, and glucosamine and condrointant. Other than that I just eat a huge salad every day (but do have a "green food supplement if I miss that), as little processed foods as I can, and watch what I'm getting my calories from. if I want to race like a $0.99 cheese burger I'll start eating McD's.
+1 for Chocolate milk, but I use Ovaltene.
+1000 on the chocolate milk...its the perfect mix of complex carbs (mainly sugars which are good because theyre easily disgestible post workout), fats, and protein. Not too mention the fact that it's delicious.
I'm a really big health freak, so i try to stay away from supplements (you never know whats in them). If by supplements you meant fish oil or flaxseed pills, i'd also stay away. Sure they can "help", but i find that nothing is as healthy or tasty as a good 'ol grilled salmon sandwich. It gets expensive, but if you eat it once every one or two weeks (i eat it 2-3 times a week cause i'm a salmon freak) it can help reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases. I'm going to assume that you dont want to spend a lot of money a week simply on fresh salmon, so you may want to go for some omega-3 fatty acid fish oil pills. They aren't as good as real fish is, but DEFINITELY less costly.
For flaxseed, buy some flaxseeds at GNC or some other health place and mix em in with your whey protein shakes. That'll put a lead in your pencil.

Here is my 2¢:
The most important supplement is a Multi-vitamin. If you train to extreme exertion or if you are very sexually active you can benefit from zinc and magnesium supplementation usually called ZMA. Some of these supplements come with other ingredients that will induce a slight increase in growth hormone due to deeper sleep if taken before bed time. Fish oil is essential because Omega 3 fatty acids are found in very few foods in our diet. Fish oil is a better source then flax seed due to the way it is metabolized. You should only need to take Glucosamine and Chondroitin if you are older then 35 or have a history of abnormal joint pain. The fact of the matter on protein is that although it is extremely beneficial some may not be retained and simply pass through your system at high doses. I notice that with supplementation of BCAA's and Protein powder I never miss a beat in training. I will mention that I'm only 20 years old but I have noticed a marked improvement in recovery time when I give my body that combo. There is something to be said for loading sodium phosphate in the muscles although I've never tried it. This is one of the main ingredients in most endurance supplements.
ONE FINAL NOTE: I noticed someone mentioned "MPH Secretologue One". Although it may be possible to increase growth hormone by adding all the right precursor ingredients this supplement contains anterior pituitary substance from animals. This material can transfer CFJ disease which is BSE in humans and may cause death.
+1,000,000,000 on BCAA's (Branched Chain Amino Acids)!! Have been taking them since July, but hadn't really experienced it's full effects until post race (Sept) when I was almost unable to move to about 45 min later ready to race again! I had always had trouble with leg radiating soreness and cramps the night of a hard run or bike no matter how well I hydrated. But the BCAA's have GREATLY reduced the pain and I can now get good sleep because of them. Best recovery supplement out there, that's why most, if not all, are putting them in recovery drinks now.
And of course a Multi-V is a no brainer!

Like I said some will frown upon what I use. Please note I don’t take all of them every day. It just depends on what training I am doing. I am a firm believer that with the right training and right diet, the right supplements will help. There are many more supplements out there legal/ illegal that will do more with harsher side effects. I stay away from those.
I usually eat 5-8 servings of veggies and fruit every day, a few servings of Lean protein, 3-4 servings of skim milk or non fat dairy, and about a gallon of water a day.
I take a multi vitamin, fish oil, and ground flax seed in addtion to my regular diet.
'Nothing to it, but to do it!'
I just eat a varied and seasonal diet of meat, vegetables, fruit, breads, legumes, nuts, and whatever. I don't really have anything against supplements but I took some for a while, ran out, and got too lazy and cheap to buy more and never noticed a difference in how I felt, looked, or performed.
thanks for all of your imput you are definately giving me an idea of what i want to use/do about supplements.
I bought a bottle of vitamin C and E, but I forgot why I was taking them. Guess if it's not broken, I shouldn't try to fix it.
Last winter I was trying to build some muscle definition with weights, and I used protein powder regularly. For what I do now, I'm guessing that much protein would just be crapped out, so I haven't bought a jug since spring. Still delicious to mix some choc protein powder with bananas, strawberries, milk, and ice, but not a need for it.
For now, it's pb & j sandwich with choc milk after a workout, or whenever I feel like it :) yum.
I figure I get most of my real nutrition from McDonalds and Arbys.
Me too.
Honestly, I don't know how people do it. When I'm training more than six hours a week, I can't keep my stomach from growling all day long. I pile on all the carb-rich calories I can find just to keep myself from going crazy...
One morning while I was carrying my HUGE load of food to the office fridge one of my office mates asked if I was stocking up for the week. I also get comments about the fact that I always seem have some sort of food in my hand while I'm walking around the office.
So, good luck with the healthy eating habits. I haven't been able to do it.
I look at this as a lifetime process. I keep trying to get better in little steps. I've got a long ways to go.
I now use chocolate milk.. sounds crazy but if you think about it makes sense, you have the sugar, carbs, protein, and fat your body needs to recover and it tastes way better than protein..
+1 on the choc mik. I can't imagine spending all that money on supplements, protein powder, etc.
I usually eat 5-8 servings of veggies and fruit every day, a few servings of Lean protein, 3-4 servings of skim milk or non fat dairy, and about a gallon of water a day.
Holy crap! You people are amazing. I'm humbled.
most important supp is a good EFA formula. Fish oils are great. i take around 10g of fish oils a day, and eat 3-4 servings of fish a day. flax seeds are also good. i also take a multivitamin. and i also take alot of product from a line called advocare. i use musclefuel, arginine extreme, catalyst, thermoplus, spark, slam, post workout, nighttime recovery and zzz's. they are all stuff you can get naturally from food, if you know WHAT to eat, and also are herbs. supplementing the products is also alot cheaper than buying $300 in groceries a week. i also eat 2-3 salads a day, 2-3 servings of fruit(or more a day) eggs, cottage cheese, any type of meat(red or white) and thats on top of my 3-4 servings of fish. yes, i eat about 7-9 times a day. its normally 9 on workout days(a preworkout and postworkout meal.)
Those that track your calorie intake, can you post your weight and daily carlorie diet?
calorie tracking is a waiste of time and energy for most people.............learn to eat healthy, learn the basics of weight gain, weight loss, weight maintanence and calorie control, and you don't need to track every calorie.
An even bigger waste of time is to base anything off someone else's stats. It's too variable from person to person. If I told you I am 5'11" and my minimum calorie requirements to just maintain my weight is 1800/day, what would that do for you?
well, you can ballpark it using a good BMR calculator, and then adjusting the calories burned to a good, accurate calories burned/hrs of certain activity, or certain activity level, which he might be trying to just figure out ball park how many cal he should be getting....which i agree it can vary tremendously from person to person.
I used to be convinced that chocolate milk was as good a recovery drink as the fancy stuff until I tried Endurox R4 a couple months ago and I've been hooked on it ever since. Not sure if it's improved fitness, an over all better diet or what but I seem to recover a ton faster since I started taking it right after workouts.
I also take a whey protein shake right before bed and try to get some protein (shake or egg whites) first thing in the morning as that helps to curb hunger during the day.
As for other supplements, I don't really take much. After hard workouts I try to take 3-500 mg of Vitamin C an hour or so after workouts, and I've been taking some Glucosamine twice a day which may or may not help. The only other supplement is some basic omega-3 fish oil supplements a few times a week but I try to eat salmon 1-2 times a week too.
Everything else is just good diet habits. Now I'm off to have some apple pie.

For those of you that use supplements/or have found that supplements aid your recovery/workout/daily life; what supplements do you use and why? Truly, I do eat better than the average american, yet I am no health-nut. And I do drink, yet in moderation.
I have just started taking the GNC mega-man vitamin again to make sure I get in my nutrients on those "not so good" days of eating. I also drink whey protein after longer workouts (+1hr). But I am hearing/reading lots about amino-acid chains, flaxseed, etc etc.
I am just wondering (for those that do supplement their diets), what supplements do you feel help you the most and why? I am training for placid and I want to be nutritionally ready for when my training kicks up over 12hrs a week. (Besides eating as healthy as some may suggest).
Thanks for any input on this subject.
